The Sr. Manager, Software Development is the senior engineering leader for the Software Solutions business and is accountable for the people, architecture, delivery, quality, security, and reliable operation of the Auction.IO marketplace platform. This role leads a geographically distributed U.S. and India engineering organization responsible for designing, delivering, operating, and continuously improving a multi-tenant SaaS platform that supports online auction businesses.
The leader will establish the technical vision and engineering operating model required to scale Auction.IO to support approximately 1,000 clients while improving delivery predictability, client onboarding efficiency, platform availability, performance, security, maintainability, and cost effectiveness. The role balances product roadmap delivery, client commitments, technical debt, operational support, and long-term platform modernization.
The ideal candidate is a pragmatic, hands-on technology leader who can move effectively between architectural discussions with engineers, roadmap and investment decisions with business leaders, and implementation or solution discussions with clients. Success will be measured through team development and retention, roadmap delivery, release quality, service availability, incident recovery, security remediation, technical-debt reduction, and progress toward scalable client growth.

Responsibilities
  • Recruit, lead, coach, and retain a high-performing, geographically distributed engineering team, developing strong technical leaders and reducing reliance on individual subject-matter experts.
  • Establish clear roles, goals, performance expectations, career development plans, succession plans, and an engineering culture grounded in accountability, collaboration, inclusion, continuous improvement, and measurable outcomes.
  • Manage engineering capacity across product development, client implementations, production support, platform modernization, security, and technical-debt reduction.
  • Partner with product management, sales leadership, and offshore delivery manager to translate business strategy and the product roadmap into an achievable engineering roadmap, staffing plan, release plan, and delivery commitments.
  • Establish reliable estimation, prioritization, development, testing, release, and change-management practices; identify delivery risks early and communicate tradeoffs, dependencies, and corrective actions clearly.
  • Define and monitor engineering measures such as delivery predictability, deployment frequency, lead time, escaped defects, system availability, incident recovery time, security remediation time, and technical-debt reduction.
  • Own the target architecture and multi-year technical roadmap for Auction.IO, including multi-tenancy, tenant isolation, configuration, extensibility, integrations, data management, performance, resilience, and operational scalability.
  • Establish architecture principles, design-review practices, technical documentation standards, technology-selection criteria, and build-versus-buy decision processes.
  • Ensure the platform supports efficient client onboarding and configuration without unnecessary client-specific customization, while preserving backward compatibility, upgradeability, and sustainable operation across a growing client base.
  • Modernize the software development lifecycle through appropriate use of infrastructure as code, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, secure coding practices, and AI-assisted development tools.
  • Set and enforce standards for code quality, unit and regression test coverage, peer review, dependency management, vulnerability remediation, performance engineering, and maintainability.
  • Establish service-level objectives, operational-readiness criteria, monitoring, alerting, incident-response, backup, disaster-recovery, and business-continuity practices appropriate for a multi-tenant SaaS marketplace.
  • Lead the technical response to major production incidents and ensure timely root-cause analysis, corrective actions, ownership, communication, and follow-through to prevent recurrence.
  • Partner with Security and Infrastructure teams to ensure the platform meets applicable enterprise, contractual, privacy, and compliance requirements.
  • Partner with Client Services and implementation teams to define technically viable solutions, estimates, integration approaches, data migrations, and implementation plans.
  • Participate in strategic client discussions, solution reviews, sales or renewal support, and escalations where senior technical leadership is required; explain constraints, alternatives, risks, and tradeoffs in business terms.
  • Establish governance for client-specific requests to protect the product roadmap, reduce platform fragmentation, and promote reusable product capabilities.
  • Manage strategic engineering vendors and partners, including performance, delivery quality, contractual commitments, dependencies, and risk.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly and indirectly supervises a geographically distributed engineering organization that may include technical leads, software engineers, quality-assurance engineers, contractors, and strategic delivery partners.
  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, goal setting, performance management, coaching, career development, succession planning, workforce planning, and, when necessary, corrective action for the software development organization.
Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading engineering teams and technical leaders.
  • Demonstrated accountability for a production SaaS platform and a geographically distributed engineering organization.
  • Proven success scaling multi-tenant, transaction-intensive software, preferably in e-commerce, marketplaces, payments, or related digital platforms.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and retain geographically distributed engineering teams, including U.S.- and India-based employees, contractors, managers, technical leads, developers, QA engineers, and DevOps or site-reliability functions.

  • Strong understanding of secure software development, OWASP risks, identity and access controls, privacy, dependency management, vulnerability remediation, and enterprise security standards.
  • Experience establishing architecture governance, engineering standards, software development lifecycle controls, technical-debt practices, and measurable engineering objectives.
  • Experience with incident management, root-cause analysis, service-level objectives, operational readiness, monitoring, and production support for business-critical platforms.
  • Experience managing budgets, vendors, contractors, cloud consumption, and blended internal and external workforces.
  • Strong business acumen and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to translate technical options, risks, and tradeoffs into clear business terms for executives, clients, and non-technical partners.
  • Familiarity with marketplace capabilities such as payments, identity, fraud prevention, search, catalog management, notifications, integrations, and back-office workflows.
  • Practical experience with AI-enabled product features, including vector search or image recognition, and with secure, effective use of AI-assisted software development tools.
  • Strong knowledge of agile product development and the judgment to adapt processes to the needs of the business rather than apply them mechanically.

Ability:

  • Lead decisively in a fast-paced environment with competing product, client, operational, and technical priorities.
  • Move comfortably between strategic leadership, architecture oversight, delivery management, client engagement, and hands-on technical problem solving when needed.
  • Build alignment across Product, Client Services, Implementation, Security, Infrastructure, Sales, and business leadership.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
