The Staff Backend Engineer will design and scale core systems for a B2B SaaS platform, focusing on backend architecture, reliability, and AI-assisted engineering workflows.

Assured is on a mission to modernize insurance. Claims processing (i.e. should we pay this claim?), while often overlooked, is the foundation of the entire industry. It’s currently highly manual, involving phone calls, faxes, and gut instinct, costing tens of billions of dollars a year. We can do better.

At Assured, we provide large insurers with the software solutions they need to win in a modern, technology-driven world. From self-service claim-filing software to backend fraud detection, we’re the engine that powers claims processing for some of the largest insurers in the world.

The challenges we face are deep and diverse, from creating digital experiences that provide comfort and clarity to claimants at their most stressed and vulnerable to orchestrating large-scale ML-driven decision-making on billions of dollars of claims payments, life at Assured is dynamic, collaborative, and rewarding.

We’re looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to help define and scale the core systems powering our rapidly growing B2B SaaS platform. This is a deeply technical role focused on building reliable, high-performance infrastructure and backend services, while embracing AI-assisted engineering as a core part of how modern software gets built.

You’ll lead the design of critical systems across APIs, distributed services, data architecture, and platform infrastructure. You’ll also help evolve how our engineering organization operates by leveraging AI tooling to accelerate development, improve reliability, automate workflows, and increase engineering velocity at scale.

This role is ideal for someone who combines strong backend and systems expertise with product thinking, operational excellence, and a modern AI-native approach to engineering.

What You’ll Do...

🌎 Own major areas of backend architecture, including APIs, distributed systems, data models, infrastructure, and core business logic.

⚡ Use AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g. Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, ChatGPT, Devin, or similar) as part of your daily workflow to accelerate development, debugging, testing, documentation, and operational efficiency.

🤖 Identify opportunities to integrate AI into both internal engineering systems and customer-facing platform capabilities.

👩‍💻 Design, build, test, deploy, and iterate on production systems end-to-end with a focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability.

🏗️ Architect systems capable of supporting increasing scale, complexity, and evolving customer workflows.

🔍 Define and implement modern testing, observability, and operational practices that improve system resilience and developer velocity.

🏎️ Build scalable abstractions, internal frameworks, and platform capabilities that enable faster product development across teams.

🧠 Drive technical direction and contribute to long-term architectural decisions around performance, security, scalability, and platform evolution.

🤝 Mentor engineers across the organization, sharing best practices and helping raise the technical bar for backend engineering and system design.

What You Bring...

📅 8+ years of backend or full-stack engineering experience, ideally in SaaS or high-scale distributed systems environments.

📈 Proven experience designing, scaling, and operating complex backend systems from early-stage growth through maturity.

🧑‍🔬 Deep expertise in distributed systems, APIs, data modeling, infrastructure, and backend architecture patterns.

🤖 Strong proficiency with modern AI engineering workflows and tooling. You actively use AI to improve development speed, problem solving, system understanding, and operational efficiency.

⚡ Strong execution mindset with the ability to balance rapid iteration against long-term reliability and maintainability.

🔒 Experience building secure, observable, fault-tolerant systems in production environments.

💬 Collaborative and pragmatic approach. You work effectively across engineering, product, infrastructure, and data teams.

🔧 Adaptability and engineering judgment matter more to us than specific frameworks or languages.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
