Data Science is at the heart of Lyft’s products and decision-making. We are hiring a Staff Data Scientist to join the Base Earnings team. This cross-functional team is responsible for setting pay for every Lyft rideshare ride, as well as ensuring compliance with our regulatory and policy commitments regarding pay.  We seek a passionate data scientist to drive business performance and driver satisfaction, and to develop new pay policies in support of new business areas (e.g., autonomous vehicles, European expansion).

In this role, you will leverage data, machine learning, optimization, experimentation, and inference techniques to develop and maintain Lyft’s pay policies.  Your technical impact will contribute directly to company-level metrics, including profit, rides completed, and driver sentiment. Leveraging your knowledge and experience, you will influence the technical growth of the cross-functional Base Earnings team - both as individuals and as a team.

Responsibilities:
  • Implementation:  Lead implementation, experimentation, deployment, and science operations for business critical driver pay algorithms
  • Strategy:  Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and others to define Lyft’s pay policy roadmap and respond to emerging technical and business challenges
  • Team Development: Help raise the technical bar within the team through process definition, defining standards, mentoring, and providing timely feedback
  • Operations:  Define and manage key performance metrics;  lead deep dives into performance anomalies and opportunities
  • Subject Matter Expert:  Be an expert on our pay policies and associated data sources
Experience:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Economics or other quantitative fields
  • 6+ years professional experience
  • Familiarity with machine learning, optimization and causal inference, with staff-level experience and expertise in at least one
  • Experience developing and operating automated decision-making algorithms
  • Significant technical project or team leadership experience
  • Proficient writing production-quality Python code
  • End-to-end experience with data, including querying, ETL, monitoring, analysis, and visualization
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to collaborate and communicate with others to solve a problem

This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Team Members will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The expected base pay range for this position in the Seattle area is $176,000 - $220,000, not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location.
