THREE is a growing insurance provider that sells a unique and straightforward insurance policy to small businesses – from restaurants, to electricians, to consultants – covering them against property risks (e.g. fire, theft, flood), lawsuits, and more. It was born out of and remains part of Berkshire Hathaway, one of the most respected companies in the world. At THREE, you’ll join a team of experienced insurance operators that chooses to run lean, promotes autonomy, and is charged with building a small commercial insurer that challenges the largest players in its space.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the President, this role is responsible for building out THREE’s analytical foundation to help drive business strategy.

  • Lead the design and evolution of statistical models and analytical research that inform the company’s most critical decisions—identifying and prioritizing high-impact opportunities across actuarial, claims, marketing, sales, engineering, and operations. Example applications include:
    • Evaluating portfolio profitability and competitiveness by segment
    • Modeling customer retention, lifetime value, and marketing performance
    • Scoring leads and agencies to prioritize sales efforts
    • Enhancing actuarial ratemaking and reserving by incorporating additional data sources
  • Operationalize your work by integrating models into production workflows used across the business.
  • Work closely with domain experts across the business to extract knowledge that improves model specification and supports effective validation.
  • Communicate results clearly and in a way that makes intuitive sense, so others can understand them, trust them, and act on them with confidence.
  • Ensure all work is reproducible, well-organized, and appropriately documented, making it easy to review and build upon.
  • Deliver decision-ready outputs backed by rigorous validation, sense checks, and quality control.
  • Design models that perform well in sparse-data settings, apply methods to stabilize noisy estimates, and clearly communicate uncertainty.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in applied data science or statistical modeling; experience in insurance or actuarial domains is a strong plus
  • Strong intuition for probabilistic reasoning and the principles underlying statistical modeling
  • Practical experience with Bayesian methods, hierarchical modeling, and simulation-based techniques
  • Deep experience with Python (or R) and SQL for building analytical workflows, with strong command of PyMC or Stan, including model tuning, diagnostics, and troubleshooting in complex Bayesian applications.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate workflows, along with a clear vision for how such tools can be thoughtfully integrated to enhance productivity while maintaining safeguards for quality, privacy, and security.
  • Strong organizational skills, acute attention to detail, and a disciplined approach to problem framing and analysis
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an eagerness to collaborate across disciplines

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
