Department OverviewThe NGCS Engineering team is responsible for the design, implementation, and operation of the network infrastructure supporting Motorola Solutions’ Next Generation Core Services (NGCS) platform for NG9-1-1.
This team delivers and maintains mission-critical network environments that enable the routing of emergency voice, SMS, and multimedia communications across geographically distributed data centers. The team works closely with internal engineering, product, and operations organizations, as well as external partners and carriers, to ensure high availability, resiliency, and performance of public safety communication systems.

About the Role
Motorola Solutions VESTA NEXT Routing Services delivers Next Generation Core Services (NGCS) supporting NG9-1-1 call routing across mission-critical public safety environments. The VESTA® Router platform enables the routing of voice, SMS, and multimedia emergency communications using NENA i3 standards to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs).
This role is part of the Infrastructure Engineering team responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the core network infrastructure supporting NGCS deployments across geographically distributed data centers.
The Network Engineer will design, implement, and support complex, multi-tenant network environments that underpin NG9-1-1 call routing services. This role requires strong ownership of network infrastructure supporting high availability, low latency, and resilient call delivery in mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement network solutions supporting NGCS infrastructure, including ESInet connectivity between PSAPs, carriers, and data centers
Configure and support Layer 2/Layer 3 networking including BGP, OSPF, VRRP, QoS, ACLs, NAT, and DNS
Support integration with carrier networks and third-party providers (OSP interconnects, backhaul, transport)
Deploy and maintain network components including switching, routing, firewalls (e.g., FortiGate), load balancing, and DNS services
Participate in network architecture design, capacity planning, and performance optimization
Develop and execute Methods of Procedure (MoPs) for network upgrades, expansions, and maintenance activities
Support change management processes, including participation in internal and customer CAB reviews
Troubleshoot complex network issues across distributed environments and drive resolution to completion
Collaborate with Product, Deployment, and Operations teams to improve reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
3+ years of experience in a Network Engineer or similar role
Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing protocols, and network design principles
Experience supporting mission-critical or high-availability environments
Hands-on experience with routing, switching, firewalls, and network security technologies
Experience with virtualized network environments (e.g., VMware, NSX, or similar) preferred
Familiarity with multi-tenant or service provider environments preferred
Certifications (CCNA/CCNP or equivalent) preferred
Additional Skills
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
Ability to work independently while maintaining accountability in a team environment
Experience documenting and executing operational procedures
Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts
Ability to mentor and support team development
Additional Requirements
Participation in on-call rotation is required
Ability to work within structured operational and change management processes
Ownership mindset with accountability for issue resolution and service delivery

Basic Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in network engineering or related infrastructure roles
- Hands-on experience with routing and switching fundamentals (TCP/IP, Layer 2/Layer 3 networking)
- Hands-on experience with Fortinet (FortiGate), VMware (ESXi/NSX), Orolia (Safran), or similar platforms
- Experience supporting production or mission-critical environments
