At Docker, we make app development easier so developers can focus on what matters. Our remote-first team spans the globe, united by a passion for innovation and great developer experiences. With over 20 million monthly users and 20 billion image pulls, Docker is the #1 tool for building, sharing, and running apps—trusted by startups and Fortune 100s alike. We’re growing fast and just getting started. Come join us for a whale of a ride!

We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer to help define, elevate, and scale the next generation of DDS (Docker Design System).

This role will partner closely with our existing Staff Designer to shape a more cohesive, modern, and expressive Docker, one rooted in robust design tokens, cross-surface consistency, world-class craft, and a refreshed visual language.

If you’re a systems thinker, a visual craft expert, and a designer who loves working closely with engineers, this is a rare opportunity to reshape one of the most iconic brands in developer tooling.

Responsibilities

Drive the Future of the Docker Design System

  • Co-lead the next evolution of Docker’s design system, including component and pattern libraries, token architecture, Figma libraries, and the migration from MUI to a more modern system.

  • Modernize Docker’s visual language and help launch a fresh, future-ready aesthetic across products.

Define a Multi-Surface System

  • Build a token-driven foundation that scales across web and desktop surfaces.

  • Partner with engineering to deliver a high-quality and efficient design system.

Elevate Visual Craft & Interaction Quality

  • Set a new bar for UI quality and consistency across the Docker ecosystem.

  • Own the visual refresh of Docker’s product experience, grounded in clarity, depth, and a clean, modern feel.

  • Collaborate with designers, offering meaningful critique and assistance to level up design cross-org.

Lead Cross-Org Alignment

  • Drive company-wide design consistency.

  • Facilitate cross-team alignment, negotiate tradeoffs, and champion systems thinking.

  • Shape rituals, governance models, contribution frameworks within the design systems team and broader design systems education within the product org.

Mentor & Partner Across the Org

  • Mentor designers, influence cross-functional peers, and coach teams on how to design with and for systems.

  • Build high-trust partnerships with engineering, product, research, and leadership.

Support Migration and Design & Developer Velocity

  • Co-lead the strategic plan for moving Docker off MUI toward a more scalable, token-led system.

  • Improve engineering velocity, reduce UI rework, and increase satisfaction for both engineering and design teams.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of product design experience, with deep exposure to design systems at scale.

  • Have shipped or rebuilt multiple design systems, ideally including migrations.

  • Strong interaction & visual design craft; you care about details others overlook.

  • Familiar with tokens, pipelines, and modern DS tooling (Figma, Storybook, Chromatic).

  • Some front-end knowledge.

  • Experience in SaaS or dev tools preferred, but not required.

You Thrive When You Are:

  • A visionary & a craftsperson, equally comfortable with big-picture system design and pixel-level polish.

  • A collaborator who works fluidly with the existing Staff Designer; responsibilities evolve based on strengths.

  • An engineering partner who speaks the language of implementation and earns engineering trust.

  • A communicator capable of storytelling at all levels, from ICs to execs.

  • A culture-builder who thrives in high-trust, transparent, designer–engineer unified environments.

Bonus (Not Required)

  • Experience shaping AI design tooling or developer workflows.

  • Comfort contributing to QA/regression workflows post-MUI reset.

  • Accessibility leadership experience.

What to ExpectFirst 3 months
  • Develop a deep understanding of DDS, its challenges, and its opportunities.

  • Ship your first component or pattern.

  • Audit concerns from designers and engineers and identify which will be solved by migration vs. separate fixes.

First 6 Months
  • Drive the next evolution of Docker’s design system vision and establish a migration plan with the DDS team.

  • Secure alignment and buy-in across leadership and partner teams.

One-year Outlook
  • Demonstrate meaningful progress toward the new system with major “big rock” issues addressed.

  • Improve engineering + design sentiment about the design system.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
