Role Description

Dropbox’s Sync Engine is the heart of what originally made Dropbox magical — the invisible technology that “just worked,” allowing people to effortlessly keep their most important files up to date everywhere. It’s the foundation of trust and delight for millions of users and teams who rely on Dropbox every day.

As the Staff Product Manager on the Desktop Core Sync team, you’ll lead the strategy and execution for the technology that powers that magic — ensuring that files stay instantly available and perfectly in sync across devices and collaborators. You’ll partner closely with a world-class engineering team to evolve our core sync architecture for the next decade, balancing deep technical complexity with simple, intuitive customer experiences.

This role requires a rare blend of technical depth, strategic vision, and product craftsmanship. You’ll translate the intricate details of distributed file systems and OS-level integration into experiences that feel effortless — whether syncing a personal project across devices or keeping an entire team’s shared workspace aligned in real time.

Responsibilities
  • Define and evangelize the long-term product vision, strategy, and roadmap for Dropbox’s Sync Engine — the foundational system that keeps content in perfect harmony across devices and teammates.
  • Lead and guide product direction for a deeply technical, cross-functional team of engineers, designers, data scientists, and platform partners.
  • Engage and cultivate relationships with partner teams across Dropbox (Desktop Experience, Mobile, Platform) to align shared goals, manage risks, and drive cohesive cross-surface experiences.
  • Become an expert in the Dropbox Desktop customer — understanding the needs of both individuals and teams through user research, partner feedback, data insights, and deep technical understanding.
  • Own complex, multi-quarter initiatives end-to-end, from defining product specs and success metrics to driving cross-company execution and sharing insights and learnings throughout the organization.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve sync reliability, speed, and transparency while maintaining Dropbox’s reputation for simplicity and trust.
  • Anticipate and adapt to platform evolution (Windows, macOS, Linux), ensuring Dropbox stays ahead of OS and filesystem changes.
  • Communicate clearly and crisply with leadership, articulating tradeoffs and strategic rationale while driving alignment through both formal processes and scrappy execution.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience as a Product Manager, with a track record of shipping high-quality, user-facing products in deeply technical domains.
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, Information Systems, Applied Math or Statistics, or relevant experience.
  • Strong technical depth — able to engage with senior engineers and make informed tradeoffs on architecture, performance, and scalability — while maintaining a deep empathy for the customer experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical systems into simple, delightful, and intuitive user experiences.
  • Proven success driving strategy and execution for platform or client-side technologies — ideally in sync, storage, networking, or distributed systems — that resulted in measurable customer value.
  • Skilled at balancing the “what” and “how”: you can navigate infrastructure decisions while keeping the end-user experience front and center.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to connect technical performance metrics with customer satisfaction and business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills — able to articulate complexity clearly and inspire both engineers and executives.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams in highly collaborative environments and operate effectively amid ambiguity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading strategy for core infrastructure or sync systems at scale.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems, file synchronization, or storage technologies.
  • Track record of delivering positive outcomes for the business and customers in technically complex domains.
  • Experience mentoring PMs or serving as a cultural leader within a high-performing product organization.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
