Profile Overview

As a Staff Engineer at Prerender, you amplify effectiveness across teams, systems, and practices. You’re deeply hands-on, but your biggest impact comes from enabling others to move faster, safer, and with greater confidence. You lead major architectural evolutions, coach engineers in XP principles, and help teams make sound technical decisions that scale across the organization.

This role combines strategic thinking with practical execution; you’ll shape the technical direction of our distributed rendering platform, align teams on shared goals, and create the conditions for consistent, high-quality delivery.

If you’re motivated by simplifying complexity, raising the bar for technical excellence, and empowering others to do their best work, you’ll thrive here.

🚀 What You’ll Do
  • Lead by doing: Contribute to core systems while modeling high standards in code quality, testing, and design.
  • Guide architectural evolution: Drive cross-team initiatives that move our systems toward simplicity, scalability, and testability.
  • Coach and mentor: Support engineers at all levels through pairing, design reviews, and hands-on coaching in XP practices.
  • Simplify complexity: Design elegant solutions to deep technical challenges in performance, reliability, and distributed rendering.
  • Unblock and empower: Spot risks early, resolve systemic bottlenecks, and establish good defaults that let teams move quickly and confidently.
  • Champion sustainable quality: Promote practices like TDD, pair programming, and continuous delivery to keep development fast without sacrificing stability.
  • Align strategy and execution: Partner with product and leadership to balance short-term delivery with long-term technical health.
🤝 How We Work

At Prerender, Staff Engineers influence through context, coaching, and example. You don’t gatekeep, you unblock, empower, and guide.

  • Influence through impact: You lead architectural direction and help teams make sound trade-offs that scale across systems and squads.
  • Think in systems: You see the connections between teams, technologies, and workflows, and help align them toward cohesive solutions.
  • Build shared context: You create clarity across teams, helping others understand not just what we’re building, but why.
  • Improve the ecosystem: You refine tooling, automation, and engineering practices that raise effectiveness across the organization.
  • Model balance: You help the org sustain both fast delivery and long-term maintainability.
🌟 A Typical Day Might Involve
  • Pairing with a team to untangle a tricky performance issue or refactor a shared library
  • Leading a design discussion that impacts multiple services or teams
  • Coaching an engineer through an architectural decision or trade-off
  • Collaborating with product and leadership to align technical investments with business goals
  • Reviewing code and providing thoughtful, actionable feedback
  • Improving CI/CD pipelines or internal tooling to make development smoother and safer
  • Helping define patterns, guardrails, or “good defaults” that raise consistency across teams
📚 What We’re Looking For
  • Proven experience: 10+ years designing and shipping complex, distributed systems
  • Architectural leadership: A track record of leading large-scale technical initiatives that simplified and strengthened core systems
  • Deep technical skill: Expertise in modern backend development - ideally in TypeScript/Node.js or Golang, plus familiarity with AWS and cloud-native infrastructure
  • Systems thinking: The ability to see across layers of the stack, connecting product goals with technical architecture
  • Coaching mindset: You elevate others through context, guidance, and example
  • Strategic clarity: You balance short-term priorities with long-term sustainability and technical health
  • Strong communicator: You make complex ideas clear to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Bias for improvement: You’re always looking for ways to make systems, teams, and practices better

Bonus if you’ve worked in SEO, web performance, or large-scale rendering infrastructure, but curiosity and adaptability matter more than specific domain expertise.

What’s in it for You

  • Freedom and autonomy: We’re a high-trust team, and you’ll be given lots of flexibility to solve problems in your own way — with plenty of help from the team when you need it.
