Sentinel Blue is looking for a Systems Engineer to join our Platforms Team. This role is ideal for someone with strong technical fundamentals, a methodical approach to problem solving, and a passion for building and maintaining secure, reliable systems. Our ideal candidate is a clear communicator who can work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, understands how systems support security and compliance objectives, and approaches engineering work with a service-oriented mindset. This role will support our clients by designing, configuring, maintaining, and validating IT systems, ensuring environments are secure, scalable, and aligned with operational and regulatory requirements.

This is a full-time position that is fully remote.

This position may require access to technology, technical data, or information that is subject to U.S. export control laws and regulations. Employment in this position is contingent upon either verification of U.S. person status as defined under applicable export control regulations (which includes U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and certain protected individuals such as refugees and asylees) or the ability to obtain any required export authorization. The company reserves the right not to apply for an export license and to decline to proceed with any applicant on that basis. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to citizenship status, national origin, or immigration status.

A day in the Systems Engineer role: The Systems Engineer may design and implement system configurations, troubleshoot infrastructure and endpoint issues, review environments against security and operational requirements, and support ongoing system improvements. They will work hands-on with identity and access management, endpoint management platforms, logging and monitoring tools, CICD tools, and cloud services to ensure systems are reliable and secure.

A Systems Engineer will collaborate to ensure systems are implemented and maintained in a way that supports regulatory requirements such as CMMC and NIST 800-171. They will participate in meetings, assist with technical guidance, support implementation efforts, support remediation efforts, and contribute to documentation that reflects system states. The role also provides opportunities to learn new technologies, deepen cloud and security expertise, and grow into more senior engineering or technical leadership roles.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain secure, reliable systems across client and internal environments, including servers, endpoints, identity platforms, and cloud services.
  • Operate and support production systems by troubleshooting and resolving infrastructure, platform, and endpoint issues, collaborating and escalating as necessary to meet service and security expectations.
  • Review, validate, and maintain system configurations (e.g., identity and access management, logging and monitoring, encryption, network segmentation, endpoint protection, backup and recovery) to ensure alignment with security, operational, and compliance requirements.
  • Implement and maintain system hardening standards, configuration baselines, patching processes, and lifecycle management practices.
  • Contribute to the execution and continuous improvement of Platforms Team objectives, including system reliability, scalability, and sustainability.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders via written and verbal channels to explain system behavior, proposed changes, risks, and remediation actions.
  • Develop and maintain accurate system documentation, diagrams, runbooks, and standard operating procedures that support operational consistency and audit readiness.
  • Support the development and maintenance of internal tooling, templates, and repeatable build processes to improve system consistency, efficiency, and security posture.

What We Can Offer:

Sentinel Blue is a young company with a focused mission: We’re bringing enterprise-class cybersecurity to small and medium sized businesses. Frankly, we’re pushing the envelope of how things are done and constantly seeking innovative ways to meet that mission. The pace is fast, and we’re always learning new things. This is a great place if you want to expose yourself to new and emerging technologies, want to be challenged, and want to build your skills. Further, success in this role can quickly transition into senior engineering or technical leadership opportunities. The right person will find themselves in a fun, dynamic environment, working on interesting problems and making a real difference.

You will be required to achieve a Security+ certification in the first 2 months of hire; we’ll cover your certification costs and provide paid time for you to study!

Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship – by nature of our work with the defense industry, all employees must be eligible for a Secret clearance.
  • 2–5 years of experience in systems engineering, systems administration, IT infrastructure, or a related technical role.
  • Hands-on experience managing Windows and/or Linux systems in professional environments.
  • Working knowledge of identity and access management, endpoint protection, logging and monitoring, vulnerability management, segmentation, and backup/recovery strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and implement reliable, well-documented solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple client tasks, and follow structured workflows to drive technical work to completion.
  • Proficiency with at least one scripting or programming language.
  • CompTIA Security+ certification is required in the first 6 months of hire.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Professional certifications such as Security+, CySA+, Microsoft Azure Administrator, or other Azure certifications.
  • Experience working in a multi-client consulting or managed services environment.
  • Familiarity with Azure, Azure Government, Microsoft 365, and Office 365 GCC High environments.
  • Practical understanding of system security concepts such as least privilege, RBAC, audit logging, configuration baselines, change management, and endpoint hardening.
  • Experience supporting cloud-first or hybrid infrastructure environments.
  • Working knowledge of a security and compliance framework such as NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, NIST 800-171, CMMC, CIS Controls, ISO 27001, or SOC 2.
  • Experience in a professional role, supporting technical discussions, troubleshooting, or remediation activities.
  • Strong interest in continuing professional growth toward senior systems engineering or platform engineering roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or equivalent work experience.

Benefits:

  • Fully paid individual healthcare, vision and dental insurance for the employee.
  • Paid certification and training opportunities.
  • Three weeks of paid vacation + 10 paid holidays.
  • A supportive environment with a focus on keeping healthy work-life balance.
  • Retirement benefit (401k) with company match.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
