POS-6923
At HubSpot, we’re on a mission to help millions of organizations grow better. Our platform is used by businesses worldwide to manage their marketing, sales, service, and operations — and under the hood, our product is built to be flexible, secure, and empowering for both our customers and our own engineering teams. We believe in autonomy, curiosity, and building a workplace where everyone can thrive.
Meet the Team: Permissions Management Backend
The Permissions Management BE team is at the heart of how customers interact safely and effectively with the HubSpot platform. Our mission? To own, define, and assign permissions on customer portals, for both internal and external users, across every corner of HubSpot. The impact goes out to every engineer and every customer. Right now, we’re a close-knit team of 3 who collaborate, mentor, and deliver together.
What’s the day-to-day like?
- 60% hands-on coding and technical ownership & leadership — get ready to roll up your sleeves!
- Mentorship and coaching are integral to our team culture.
- Collaborating with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders all across HubSpot.
- Working together to define and deliver new permission models and services.
How are we growing?
In the next year, as permissions becomes increasingly complex and as we work to improve our services, we’re planning to expand — and with that, so will your opportunities: think bigger scope, bigger challenges, and a pathway for you to grow into a Technical Lead II.
Key projects you’ll work on:
- Overhauling our permissions model to handle more granularity and a higher volume — empowering teams to move faster, at scale.
- Making permissions self-service, so our engineers and customers save time and effort.
- Laying the foundations to weave AI into permissions for smarter, faster processes.
- Collaborating closely with both infrastructure and product teams — company-wide impact.
Responsibilities:
- Own and deliver backend projects, leading by example with hands-on Java development.
- Mentor teammates and foster a positive, inclusive, and learning-first environment.
- Work cross-functionally with engineering and product partners across HubSpot.
- Design, build, and support performant, secure, and scalable systems.
- Drive quality in everything we ship, from planning and design through testing and deployment.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Is a strong senior backend engineer (Java experience required) with formal leadership on smaller teams — especially in critical or challenging systems.
- Loves to take ownership, work collaboratively, and figure things out in a fast-moving environment.
- Consistently ships reliable, performant, well-tested code.
- Has a thirst for technical challenges and distributed systems.
- Knows how to foster autonomy, psychological safety, and learning on their teams.
- Enjoys mentoring and coaching — and is open to learning from others too.
- Puts the customer at the center, shaping insights that help improve the HubSpot platform.
- Is excited by the chance to impact all of HubSpot’s engineers, and set the standard on a tier 1, business-critical system.
