Job Title: Advanced Services Engineer Subject Matter Expert (SME)

About Varonis

At Varonis, we see the world of cybersecurity from a unique perspective here, in that we focus relentlessly on securing data which is the most valuable and vulnerable asset in today’s digital economy. While traditional cybersecurity solutions protect the perimeter, we protect what matters most: your data. Our platform provides a deep visibility into who is accessing data, where it resides, and how it’s being used which empowers organizations to detect threats and respond in real time.

We give companies vision of who is doing what, where, and when inside their environment. We can show them where their sensitive data is stored, who has access to it and who shouldn’t have access to it. We can alert unwanted activity within minutes and stop the bad guys in their tracks. We are the secret weapon companies need to have in their arsenal.

Role Summary

The Advanced Services Engineer (ASE) Subject Matter Expert (SME) plays a critical role in helping customers unlock the full value of their Varonis investment. In this post-sales role, the ASE partners with customers to drive measurable outcomes, navigate unique or complex scenarios, and help customers configure their environment to meaningfully reduce risk. A solid working knowledge of deployment is expected, but this role is focused on optimization, strategic guidance, and outcomes. While the ASE will touch a range of Cloud and IaaS environments, the expectation is deep, applied expertise in a subset of these platforms rather than broad proficiency across all of them. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, adaptability and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical teams and executive stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive measurable outcomes from customers through hands-on engagement.
  • Guide customers through complex scenarios that fall outside standard playbooks.
  • Assess customer environments and recommend changes that reduce risk and strengthen their security posture.
  • Translate customer requirements into actionable technical solutions
  • Provide guidance on security best practices and product usage
  • Lead remediation and optimization engagements
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex, escalated issues both remotely and on-site
  • Track and report on engagement progress and outcomes

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent technical education, with 3-5 years of customer-facing role.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and executive audiences.
  • Deep expertise in at least one major IaaS platform (AWS, Azure, GCP), including identity and permissions management and container services (e.g., EKS/ECS, AKS, or GKE); networking experience is a plus.
  • Relevant cloud certifications preferred, such as AWS Cloud practitioner, Associate, or Professional; equivalent Azure certifications are also welcome.
  • Familiarity with cloud data and platform technologies such as Databricks, Snowflake, GCP, and Azure.
  • Exposure to security technologies and enterprise IT environments.
  • Experience with Agentic AI, MCPs, or basic level coding is a plus, though not required.
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Customer-first mindset with a proactive, solution-oriented approach.

Core Competencies

  • Technical Expertise: Continuously develops and shares knowledge; applies technical skills to solve complex problems.
  • Customer Focus: Builds strong relationships; responds promptly to customer needs; delivers high-quality service.
  • Problem Solving: Analyzes issues effectively; develops and implements practical solutions.
  • Communication: Communicates clearly and professionally in both written and verbal formats; adapts messaging to diverse audiences.
  • Adaptability: Thrives in dynamic environments; adjusts to shifting priorities and evolving customer needs.
  • Sense of Urgency: Prioritizes effectively; acts decisively to meet critical deadlines and business objectives.

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
