About the Team:

OpenAI didn’t begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood, as it leaves the lab and meets the world.

This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it’s unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told, in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning.

About the Role:

We’re looking for an experienced Art Director to join our in-house creative team. In this role, you’ll concept and direct high-impact, multi-channel campaigns that elevate OpenAI’s brand and communicate the capabilities, benefits, and ethical considerations of our technology. You’ll partner closely with writers, designers, marketers, product leads, and external vendors to produce visually stunning work- from key visuals and web experiences to video storyboards, product trailers, and live event creative.

To us, creativity is a team sport. Ideas get better when you talk them through and build on each other’s thinking. We value curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and the ability to balance craft with decisiveness.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the creative development of marketing campaigns, product launches, and brand moments - from concept to final execution.

  • Develop and direct compelling visual narratives that bring OpenAI’s story and products to life.

  • Translate abstract ideas and complex technology into clear, inspiring, and elegant visual communication.

  • Collaborate with writers, designers, brand strategists, product marketing, and external creative partners.

  • Provide visual direction for campaign photography, illustration, and video - sometimes hands-on, sometimes through external vendors.

  • Establish and maintain a high visual bar across all marketing outputs, ensuring consistency with OpenAI’s evolving brand identity.

  • Contribute to the evolution of OpenAI’s brand system in ways that are scalable, distinctive, and expressive.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 10+ years of experience as an Art Director at in-house or at a top-tier creative agency, with a portfolio that shows work for modern technology brands.

  • Bring a strong background in visual design with fluency across channels - digital, social, film, print, and experiential.

  • Are a conceptual thinker who can ideate strategically and visually across formats and campaigns.

  • Are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, and have experience scaling ideas under tight timelines.

  • Are passionate about design craft and committed to building systems and stories that elevate brand presence over time.

  • Value collaboration and feedback, and thrive in cross-functional environments with marketing, design, and product teams.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
