Job Summary

The Database Administrator (SQL) is responsible for designing, supporting, and optimizing SQL database environments across managed services customers. This role ensures database performance, availability, security, and reliability in complex production environments while partnering closely with customers and internal engineering teams.
The ideal candidate brings strong SQL expertise, a proactive mindset, and experience supporting large or mission-critical database systems. This is a remote position and requires a dedicated home office, with limited travel as needed.

Role Description

  • Design, build, administer, and support SQL database environments across customer-managed platforms

  • Ensure database performance, availability, reliability, and security in production environments

  • Monitor, diagnose, and resolve database performance and stability issues

  • Perform backup and restore activities, high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR), and disaster recovery planning and execution

  • Optimize existing environments and contribute to standardization through documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Participate in and lead managed services projects aligned to customer objectives

  • Engage directly with customers through incident response, change requests, meetings, and status updates

  • Track and document work accurately in the PSA system, including weekly timesheet submission

  • Support audits, compliance efforts, and on-call rotations as required

  • Collaborate with senior engineers on complex escalations and solution design

Skill Level Requirements

  • Deep expertise with Microsoft SQL Server (on-premises and/or cloud-based)

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Backup and restore strategies

    • High availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR)

    • Performance tuning and optimization

  • Experience supporting large or complex database environments

  • Exposure to the Azure cloud platform

  • SQL Server administration and troubleshooting

  • Database performance monitoring and tuning

  • HA/DR implementations and recovery planning

  • Experience with version control tools (Git, Azure DevOps, or similar)

  • Strong documentation and change control discipline

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and adapt communication style to the audience

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage workloads

  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate effectively, and contribute to team-based problem solving

  • Adaptability to changing priorities, environments, and customer needs

  • Strong judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills

  • Willingness to learn and apply new technical skills with guidance

  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify complex issues and implement solutions independently

Preferred Skill Level Requirements

  • Familiarity with IT Glue, Autotask, Datto RMM, and documentation tools

  • Experience with automation or scripting related to database operations

  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines or database deployment automation

Certifications

  • One or more database-related certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate

  • ITIL v3+ certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)

Other Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent hands-on experience

  • 3–5 years of experience supporting SQL database environments (managed services experience preferred)

  • Ability to travel up to 10% annually

  • Participation in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours or holiday support

  • Availability for occasional overtime based on customer or business needs

  • Ability to meet utilization targets set by leadership

  • Must successfully pass a CJIS background check upon hire and annually thereafter

The estimated annual pay range for this position is $110,000 - $140,000 which includes a base salary and bonus. The compensation for this position is dependent on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location and, therefore, will vary from individual to individual. Benefits may include, but are not limited to, medical, vision, dental, 401K, and flexible spending.
