Overview

Microsoft is seeking a strategic and operational leader to join the Windows + Devices (W+D) organization as Director, Business Manager. This role will lead a high-impact team responsible for all Financial Operations and Resource Management capabilities across W+D, focusing on enabling organizational effectiveness at scale.

This leader will play a critical role in helping transform the organization into a modern Executive Office operating model—bringing together strategic planning, financial stewardship, organizational governance, executive decision support, operational excellence, and AI-enabled business processes. Successful candidates will bring a combination of executive presence, business acumen, organizational leadership, financial expertise, and change management capabilities. They must thrive in ambiguity, influence across complex stakeholder ecosystems, and lead teams through significant transformation while maintaining operational excellence.

This role reports into the Windows + Devices Chief of Staff and partners closely with Engineering, Finance, Human Resources (HR), Recruiting, Procurement, and Corporate Functions.

Responsibilities

Financial Operations Excellence

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and execution across a large-scale portfolio spanning multiple product Profit and Loss (P&Ls). 
  • Define and drive operational rhythms including budgeting, forecasting, monthly close reviews, long range planning, variance analysis, risk and opportunity tracking, and executive reporting. 
  • Ensure operational rigor, financial accountability, process consistency, and transparency across supported organizations. 
  • Lead cross-functional efforts to improve forecast accuracy, optimize investments, and identify cost efficiencies. 
  • Drive continuous improvement of business management processes, reporting frameworks, and decision-support tools. 

Strategic Planning & Resource Allocation

  • Establish frameworks for effective resource allocation across a diverse product portfolio spanning silicon, first and third-party devices, operating systems, cloud services, and endpoint Artificial Intelligence (AI) scenarios. 
  • Partner with executive leadership to translate business strategy into investment plans, resource allocation decisions, and operating priorities. 
  • Lead budget planning, forecasting, resource allocation, affordability reviews, and investment governance processes. 
  • Provide data-driven recommendations that optimize investments across people, operating expenses, and cost of goods sold. 
  • Drive long-range planning and quarterly business reviews that connect strategic priorities to resource decisions.  

Executive Office Leadership & Transformation

  • Provide leadership and vision to define and implement the future operating model for business management and financial operations. 
  • Establish clear operating principles, organizational accountability, and governance mechanisms that enable executive decision making. 
  • Drive organizational transformation focused on simplification, automation, AI adoption, and scalability. 

Organizational Effectiveness & Executive Support 

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on organizational health, operating rhythms, priorities, business performance, and execution risks. 
  • Develop executive-level insights that support strategic discussions and business reviews. 
  • Build strong partnerships across Finance, HR, Recruiting, Procurement, Communications, Legal, and other corporate functions. 
  • Create alignment across a broad set of stakeholders while balancing competing business priorities.  

People Leadership 

  • Lead a team spanning financial operations, procurement operations, investment planning, tooling, business management, and organizational execution. 
  • Build an inclusive, high-performance culture focused on growth, accountability, operational excellence, and customer impact.

AI, Automation & Modernization 

  • Lead modernization efforts that reduce operational toil and improve organizational productivity.
  • Drive adoption of AI-powered solutions that improve speed, quality, decision making, and operational efficiency. 


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field (e.g., Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Management, Computer Science) AND 8+ years experience in financial management, business planning, operations management, strategy, project management, human resources or business-related roles
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated executive-level communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience supporting senior executives and working within an executive office environment.
  • Significant experience in business operations, finance, strategy, executive office, business management, or organizational leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of influencing the business through proactive financial analysis and insight.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize across multiple workstreams with meticulous attention to detail, and ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience managing teams and driving organizational change at scale.
  • Able to handle diverse stakeholders with a high degree of ambiguity, bring partners along in thought leadership and finance agenda, and be relentless and think outside the box.
  • Deep understanding of Microsoft financial planning processes, budgeting, forecasting, and resource management.
  • Experience operating across engineering, product, or technology organizations.
  • Demonstrated success in business transformation and operational modernization.
  • Experience balancing strategic planning with operational execution in highly matrixed organizations.

Business Management M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $130,900 - $277,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,600 - $303,600 per year.
