Overview

AmTrust Financial Services, a fast-growing commercial insurance company, is currently seeking a Director, Claims within our General Liability group. The successful candidate will manage and mentor a team of claims professionals handling high-exposure and complex General Liability claims. They will provide technical claims leadership and strategic direction in coverage analysis, liability assessment, damages evaluation, settlement strategy, and litigation management while fostering the professional growth and claims expertise of their direct reports. The claims under management arise in various jurisdictions throughout the country and, as such, experience in multiple states is required.

Responsibilities
  • Owns the development and performance of a General Liability claims team, ensuring the quality, accuracy, and timely resolution of commercial liability claims of high complexity and/or severity.
  • Assigns new claims to team members based on complexity and skill set of staff.
  • Oversees the handling of all aspects of the claims assigned to the team including investigation, communication, documentation, reserving, litigation management, evaluation, negotiation and settlement/disposition.
  • Provide technical guidance on challenging coverage, liability, litigation, and damage assessment issues.
  • Ensures that all customers receive timely and quality service by building an understanding of the customer experience that meets and exceeds stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Completes regular manager reviews of claims to ensure work meets or exceeds standards and that claims handling is consistent with applicable policies, procedures and department guidelines.
  • Regularly participates in claims roundtable discussions focusing on claims issues surrounding coverage, liability and assessment of damages.
  • Manages personnel administration including employee evaluations and performance.
  • Creates an environment that ensures transparency, accountability, training, and development.
  • Prepares regular periodic reports and monitors system reports to ensure adherence to corporate and regulatory standards.
  • Reviews and analyzes processes, procedures and workflows to identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging legal, regulatory, and industry developments affecting general liability claims.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in leadership roles within the insurance industry.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant and progressive claims experience across multiple commercial liability lines, with expertise in general liability claims.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Multi-jurisdictional claims expertise.
  • Thorough understanding of tort and contract law, liability insurance, and coverage principles.
  • Strong contractual analysis skills, including evaluation of insurance policies for coverage and other contracts for risk transfer obligations and opportunities.
  • Skilled negotiator.
  • Proven experience managing diverse teams of claims professionals across multiple offices and geographic locations.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, coaching, and employee development capabilities.
  • Strong planning, organizational, delegation, and talent development skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize large volumes of data, develop actionable insights, and drive results.
  • Demonstrated drive, initiative, and commitment to achieving exceptional outcomes.
  • High emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
  • Adaptability and openness to change, with a demonstrated ability to seek, accept, and constructively apply feedback.
  • Valid claims adjuster's license in applicable jurisdictions or eligibility to obtain one.
