The Director of Technical Program Management (Director of TPM) is a strategic, high-leverage leadership role designed for seasoned technical leaders who thrive at the intersection of software & hardware engineering, data analytics, and organizational execution. In our lean organization, Directors of TPM serve as single-threaded owners of both the TPM function and the company’s most critical, high-stakes programs. They bring deep engineering insight and executive-level execution precision, earning visibility and trust by scaling impact across products and infrastructure. They partner closely with engineering and product leaders to shape roadmaps, drive architectural decisions, and establish the operating rhythm of the business. The most successful Directors quickly master new domains, navigate technical complexity, build high-performing teams in resource-constrained environments, and adapt in fast-moving settings. This role is ideal for former senior engineers or TPMs who have evolved into organizational leaders.

As a Director of Technical Program Management (TPM), you will:

  • Build, lead, and scale a lean, high-impact TPM organization while personally owning the most critical cross-functional programs that span multiple engineering organizations and require deep technical understanding, rigorous execution, and strategic influence.

  • Manage ambiguity, cross-org dependencies, and alignment in a resource-constrained environment.

  • Partner with engineering leads on strategy and full lifecycle of key programs - from ideation through execution to operational excellence.

  • Partner at the executive level with engineering and product leadership to shape multi-year roadmaps, influence architectural trade-offs, and drive accountability across the company.

  • Leverage data-driven insights to inform decisions, uncover systemic opportunities, and communicate clearly with senior stakeholders.

  • Guide the evolution of Snap’s technical ecosystem by directing the creation of automation, internal tooling, and platform improvements that increase engineering velocity and reliability.

  • Work across both development programs (with complex interdependencies) and platform excellence programs (focused on reliability, efficiency, performance, and cost optimization).

  • Drive the operating rhythm of the business, ensuring engineering systems scale effectively while remaining highly cost-conscious and performant in a lean organization.

  • Recruit, mentor, develop, and grow TPMs and engineers to build organizational capability and multiply impact with limited headcount.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in a technical field such as computer science, mathematics, statistics or equivalent years of experience

  • 10+ years of experience spanning Engineering / Technical Program Management leading cross-functional efforts in consumer hardware, software, or the broader tech industry in a data-driven environment.

  • 5+ years managing a team in a corporate environment.

  • A proven track record of leading large-scale, ambiguous programs across distributed teams.

  • Previous work experience in fast-paced, cross-functional environments, especially in the area of consumer technology.

  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Grafana, Looker, Tableau) building dashboards, source control (e.g. GitHub), ticket management (e.g. JIRA).

  • Comfort operating with high visibility and accountability; you thrive on ownership and impact.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new domains, systems, and technologies.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working directly with engineers and contributing to technical design, architectural trade-offs, and roadmap planning.

  • A background in software and/or hardware engineering.

  • Experience managing production systems, reliability initiatives, or cost optimization programs.

  • Exposure to high-scale consumer technology or social platforms with strong privacy, performance, or safety requirements.

  • Strong storytelling and presentation skills—especially with senior engineering or executive audiences.

  • Masters or PhD in a highly analytical field.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
