What you can expect
This role grows and inspires the engineering organization at Common Room, combining technical leadership with company-building impact. The manager will guide engineering strategy, scale the team, and ensure delivery of systems that are robust, reliable, and delightful for customers. The role bridges engineering, product, design, and other stakeholders — keeping the team ahead of the roadmap while balancing execution, scalability, and long-term strategy. The ideal candidate's ability to learn quickly (about the product, business, and technology) is their superpower. They are motivated by growth and learning while bringing experience to help others accelerate theirs.
About the Team
With eight specialized departments, the engineering team functions as a highly collaborative, diverse powerhouse. Each department mission is to deliver seamless and innovative communication solutions. These range from software development and machine learning to quality assurance teams that work to create and maintain Zoom's user-friendly interfaces and robust infrastructure. The team continues to push the boundaries of communication technology, bringing people together regardless of their physical distance.
Responsibilities
- Defining and execute engineering strategy: Align technical direction with business goals, balancing velocity with quality and scalability.
- Building and scaling the team: Recruit, retain, and mentor world-class engineers and managers, while fostering career growth and leadership development.
- Driving execution at scale: Ensure timely delivery of complex, high-impact projects across the stack, with a focus on backend systems and infrastructure.
- Partnering cross-functionally: Work closely with product, design, and business stakeholders to shape the roadmap and deliver on company priorities.
- Championing engineering excellence: Establish standards for architecture, observability, performance, and operational excellence. Fostering culture: Create a psychologically safe environment where teams can innovate, take ownership, and do their best work.
- Company-building: Contribute to hiring practices, onboarding, organizational design, and other initiatives that support growth as a startup.
What we’re looking for
- Have 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 2+ years leading teams (people management and technical leadership). Have experience scaling engineering organizations at a fast-growing startup or tech company.
- Demonstrate deep sense of judgment on tradeoffs, architecture, and tooling; favoring supported, stable technologies over trends.
- Display proven ability to deliver large, complex projects while keeping teams unblocked and motivated.
- Demonstrate deep familiarity with backend systems, distributed architecture, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Postgres; Node.js/TypeScript experience).
- Track record of building diverse, high-performing teams and fostering an inclusive, feedback-rich culture.
- Have the ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels — comfortable in code reviews one moment and board-level discussions the next.
