Description

Whitepages helps millions of people stay connected, stay protected, and make informed decisions, and our mobile apps area big part of that mission. We're looking for an Engineering Lead to own our ReactNative mobile experience end to end — setting technical direction, growing a small high-trust team, and pushing our product to feel as fast and complete as our web experience. This is a hands-on leadership role, but “hands-on” looks different here than it used to: you'll spend your time directing and reviewing the output of coding agents vs. writing code yourself, and you'll be expected to have real judgment about when to delegate to an agent, when to step in by hand, and how to keep quality high either way. You'll make architecture calls, set the technical direction the agents work within, and work shoulder-to-shoulder with product, design and marketing to help decide what we build next, not just how.

We're rethinking how mobile engineering gets done, and agentic workflows are central to that. This role owns how our team orchestrates coding agents day to day — scoping the work they're trusted with, building the guardrails (tests, review gates, CI checks) that keep their output safe to ship, and continuously tuning the workflow as the tools improve. We want a lead who treats agent management as a core engineering skill, not a side experiment — someone who can get a team of engineers and agents shipping together faster than either could alone, without sacrificing code quality or product judgment.

This role starts focused on Mobile, but it isn't meant to stay siloed there. As agentic workflows take over more of the routine implementation work, we expect engineers — especially leads — to spend less time boxed into one stack and more time flexing across our engineering orgs wherever the product needs the most judgment: Mobile today, with Web and Data work entering the mix as our roadmap and agent capabilities evolve. We're looking for someone who's energized by that direction, not just tolerant of it — someone who wants to grow into a generalist engineering leader over time rather than staying a specialist in one surface area.

What You'll Do

  • Lead a small team of mobile engineers: set technical direction, review code and architecture decisions, and mentor engineers toward greater ownership and craft.
  • Own the architecture of our ReactNative applications across iOS and Android, balancing shared code with platform-specific quality.
  • Partner directly with Product, Design and Marketing to shape the roadmap — you'll be expected to bring product judgment to the table, not just estimate tickets.
  • Build, evaluate, and roll out agentic and AI-assisted engineering workflows (coding agents, automated code review, test generation, CI triage) to raise the team's velocity and code quality.
  • Champion testability, accessibility, and usability as first-class concerns in every feature, not an afterthought.
  • Own and evolve our mobile CI/CD pipeline, including automated UI testing and release processes.
  • Translate technical tradeoffs into plain language for non-technical stakeholders, and technical requirements the other direction.
  • Act as a role model for operational excellence — reduce technical debt, improve documentation, and keep a healthy sense of urgency on the team.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading or mentoring other engineers.
  • 4+ years of experience with ReactNative, or a strong combination of React web and native/hybrid mobile development.
  • 5+ years of experience with JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Proven ability to own architecture for a production mobile app used at meaningful scale.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools or agentic workflows in a real engineering workflow (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, custom agent pipelines) - you can speak to what worked, what didn't, and where you'd draw the line on trusting an agent's output.
  • Strong product sense: you ask “should we build this” as often as “how should we build this,” and you can back that judgment with user impact, not just opinion.
  • A track record of working through ambiguity to a shipped, well-tested solution with real autonomy and ownership.
  • Excellent communication skills across engineering, product, and non-technical audiences.
  • Genuine interest in growing beyond mobile over time — comfortable picking up backend/services or data-oriented work as the role expands, rather than staying siloed to one stack.

Nice to Have

  • Experience building ReactNative libraries with native (iOS/Android) integration, or native development in Swift/Kotlin.
  • Experience designing or operating agentic systems in production (not just using AI tools, but building the workflows/tooling around them).
  • Experience with mobile CI/CD, UI automation frameworks, and release engineering.
  • Familiarity with customer data platforms (CDPs) and interpreting product analytics to inform roadmap decisions.
  • Experience on hybrid agile teams, and comfort with informal project management (scoping, estimation, status reporting).
  • Prior exposure to backend services or data engineering/analytics work — you don't need to be an expert, but you've worked outside mobile before and know you can ramp up quickly.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
