Mechanical Product Design Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a highly creative, design-focused Mechanical Engineer to support the development of next-generation consumer hardware products. The ideal candidate is an Industrial Design-savvy Mechanical Engineer who thrives in the early stages of product development and has extensive experience partnering directly with Industrial Designers to transform design intent into functional, manufacturable products.

This role will sit at the intersection of Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering, helping translate early concepts and user experiences into viable mechanical architectures, prototypes, mechanisms, and ultimately production-ready solutions.

The ideal candidate will bring strong mechanical engineering fundamentals while also possessing an excellent understanding of product aesthetics, form, ergonomics, materials, and the Industrial Design process.

Responsibilities

• Partner closely with Industrial Designers to translate design intent and early product concepts into technically feasible mechanical solutions.

• Drive front-end product development, including concept exploration, mechanical architecture, feasibility assessment, rapid prototyping, and iterative design.

• Develop creative mechanical solutions that preserve the intended product experience, aesthetics, form factor, and functionality.

• Create and refine detailed 3D CAD models and assemblies using Siemens NX.

• Build and evaluate high-fidelity prototypes, mockups, mechanisms, and proof-of-concept hardware to quickly assess design directions.

• Evaluate materials, manufacturing processes, component packaging, assembly methods, and mechanical architecture during early product development.

• Collaborate across Industrial Design, Product Design Engineering, Electrical Engineering, manufacturing, and other technical teams to move concepts toward production.

• Identify technical risks and design constraints early while developing solutions that minimize compromise to the original design intent.

• Apply DFM/DFA, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and sound mechanical engineering principles as concepts mature toward production.

• Work with internal teams and external manufacturing partners to develop and validate novel components, processes, and product solutions.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

• 5+ years of mechanical/product design engineering experience, ideally developing consumer electronics, wearable technology, or other highly designed physical products.

• Advanced hands-on experience with Siemens NX for 3D CAD modeling, assemblies, and mechanical design.

• Demonstrated experience working directly and collaboratively with Industrial Design teams throughout the product development lifecycle.

• Strong front-end development experience, including concept development, feasibility, prototyping, mechanical architecture, and design iteration.

• Proven ability to translate Industrial Design intent into functional and manufacturable mechanical solutions.

• Experience designing plastic and/or metal components for production manufacturing processes.

• Strong hands-on prototyping and mechanical problem-solving skills.

• Experience collaborating across ID, ME/PDE, EE, manufacturing, and other cross-functional engineering disciplines.

• Strong communication and visualization skills with the ability to operate effectively in fast-moving, ambiguous development environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing high-volume consumer electronics, handheld devices, wearable products, AR/VR hardware, or similarly complex consumer products.

• Experience owning mechanical designs from early concept exploration through manufacturing and production.

• Strong understanding of Industrial Design principles, including aesthetics, ergonomics, form development, materials, finishes, and user experience.

• Experience developing highly cosmetic products where mechanical solutions must preserve strict Industrial Design requirements.

• Experience with complex surfacing and advanced CAD modeling in Siemens NX.

• Knowledge of DFM/DFA, GD&T, statistical tolerance analysis, functional dimensioning, and manufacturing processes.

• Experience defining product-level mechanical architectures and integrating complex internal components within constrained product envelopes.

• Experience working directly with prototype shops, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to rapidly develop and evaluate new concepts.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
