The Position

Job TitleMortgage FP&A Director

Job Description

First United's Mortgage division is an end-to-end retail mortgage business, spanning origination, servicing, pricing, MSR valuation and hedging. The division produces more than $2 billion in annual origination volume, services a portfolio of approximately $16 billion, and supports more than $3 billion of jumbo loans held on the bank's balance sheet. Mortgage is a meaningful contributor to the bank's fee income and to the customer relationships we build in the communities we serve.

The Mortgage FP&A Director owns the financial planning, forecasting, profitability analysis, and management reporting for First United's mortgage business. Reporting to the Mortgage Chief Financial Officer, with potentially one to two resources supporting the role, the position partners with mortgage leadership (and their teams), accounting and the Banks finance teams.

Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Provide actionable, metric driven, insight-oriented analysis to the Mortgage CEO, CFO, and the leadership team to drive business results. Partner with the Bank FP&A and Finance teams, as appropriate. Key responsibilities include:

FP&A Rhythms, Expense Management, and Allocations
  • Own the FP&A operating rhythms for the Mortgage business, including monthly finance and expense management reviews with the leadership team.
  • Prepare monthly presentation and analysis materials for Board and business updates.
  • Own and articulate allocations between Mortgage and the Bank, and across cost centers within Mortgage.

Forecasting, Budgeting, and Long-Range Planning

  • Own the monthly Forecast, annual Budget, and five-year driver-based model for the business.
  • Model rate, volume, and capacity scenarios, including downside cases.

Analysis and Business Partnership

  • Own loan-level profitability, including cost to produce and cost of servicing, benchmarked against MBA and STRATMOR peer data.
  • Own portfolio economics for jumbo and other loans held on balance sheet, including spread, funding cost, and contribution to mortgage results.
  • Support pricing, incentive compensation, and staffing decisions.
  • Reflect gain-on-sale, hedge, and MSR results in mortgage financial reporting in coordination with secondary marketing, which owns these areas.
  • Partner closely with the Bank Accounting and FP&A teams.

Team and Process

  • Lead and develop the team supporting the role (as applicable).
  • Build sustainable, repeatable processes using AI and advanced Excel modeling.
  • Perform other duties as requested by executive management or supervisor.

Required Education and Work Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
  • Ten or more years of FP&A and/ or financial analysis experience, of which at least 5 years in mortgage finance is highly preferred.
  • Experience leading a small finance team while staying hands-on in the models and reporting.
  • MBA in Finance, CFA, or another advanced finance degree preferred; CPA a plus.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills, including driver-based forecasting and scenario analysis.
  • Knowledge of mortgage banking economics across lending and servicing, including gain on sale, cost to produce, cost of servicing, and an understanding of MSR valuation/ hedging.
  • Financial statement, balance sheet, and margin analysis experience.
  • Working knowledge of typical mortgage loan origination and servicing systems such as Encompass and MSP, and of core banking systems such as Jack Henry.
  • Working SQL skills and experience with Power BI or similar analytics tools.
  • Experience with enterprise planning and budgeting software.
  • Ability to explain financial results clearly to executives and non-financial partners.
  • Strong organization and the ability to deliver on deadline across competing priorities.
