PACU Supervisor-RN

Pacific Northwest Fertility (PNWF), is seeking a full time, experienced, organized, and compassionate Registered Nurse to lead our PACU team at our Bellevue location. This is a hands-on supervisory role that combines active patient care in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) with operational leadership across pre-op, intra-op, and post-op functions.

The PACU & Surgical Services Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day management of the OR/PACU environment, supervision of the clinical support team, quality assurance and accreditation compliance (AAAHC), staff development, and works in close collaboration with our physician and anesthesia teams. This individual sets the tone for a safe, efficient, and patient-centered surgical experience.The ideal candidate brings previous PACU or perioperative RN experience, a proven leadership presence, and the exceptional professionalism that our patients and team deserve during some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.

Essential Functions: 

Patient Care- PACU/Pre Op/Post Op

• Provides direct, high-quality nursing care to patients in the PACU, ensuring safe and compassionate recovery following fertility-related surgical procedures (egg retrievals, D&Cs, hysteroscopies, and other in-office procedures).

• Conducts pre-operative assessments, patient education, and informed consent verification prior to procedures.

• Monitors patient recovery, manages pain and nausea, assesses for complications, and determines readiness for discharge using evidence-based criteria.

• Administers medications and IV therapy within scope of practice; demonstrates competency in IV placement and relevant pharmacology.

• Communicates clinical updates and any concerns to the physician and anesthesia provider promptly and clearly.

• Maintains a calm, reassuring presence with patients and their support persons throughout the perioperative experience.

Supervisory and Operational Leadership

• Oversees all clinical activity across the OR, pre-op, and PACU areas, ensuring smooth patient flow and appropriate staffing coverage throughout the surgical day.

• Directly supervises PACU nursing staff and Medical Assistants assigned to the surgical services team; provides real-time guidance, feedback, and support.

• Manages day-to-day staff scheduling for the PACU/OR team, including weekday coverage, holiday rotation, and occasional weekend shifts.

• Participates in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring for PACU and clinical support positions in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Services.

• Conducts regular staff performance evaluations and provides ongoing coaching and mentorship.

• Serves as the primary liaison between clinical support staff and the physician and anesthesia teams, facilitating clear communication and rapid problem resolution.

• Leads and attends relevant departmental huddles, leadership meetings, and scheduled 1:1s with the Director of Clinical Services.

Training and Onboarding

Develops and implements orientation and onboarding programs for new PACU staff and Medical Assistants rotating through the surgical services area.

• Trains staff on PACU protocols, equipment operation, emergency procedures, documentation requirements, and patient care standards.

• Coordinates ongoing in-service education to keep all team members current with evolving clinical practices, regulatory requirements, and PNWF protocols.

• Maintains current knowledge of BLS/ACLS requirements for the team; coordinates compliance tracking and renewal.

Quality Assurance, Compliance, and Accreditation

• Participates in the Quality Assurance committee and helps lead applicable trainings and studies for quality maintenance at PNWF.

• Serves as a primary contributor to PNWF's AAAHC accreditation preparation, maintenance, and survey readiness — including policies, procedures, logs, and environmental standards.

• Maintains accurate and complete records, logs, and documentation required for accreditation and regulatory compliance (e.g., equipment checks, temperature logs, sterilization records, crash cart logs, staff credentialing records).

• Identifies quality improvement opportunities and leads or participates in QA initiatives related to surgical services and patient outcomes.

• Ensures compliance with employee requirements including BLS/ACLS certifications, license renewals, and annual competency verification.

• Contributes to compliance of all applicable governmental, accreditation, and organizational regulations; stays current with changes and communicates updates to the team.

• Maintains PNWF's surgical suite in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and safety standards at all times.

Equipment, Supplies, and Environment

• Oversees inventory management for the PACU and OR areas, including ordering supplies and medications, tracking stock levels, and maintaining par levels.

• Conducts routine assessment of surgical and recovery equipment to verify proper functioning; schedules maintenance and service with vendors as needed.

• Ensures emergency equipment (crash cart, defibrillator, suction) is checked, stocked, and documented per schedule.

Scheduling and Coverage

Builds and manages the weekly staff schedule for the PACU and surgical support team, proactively identifying and addressing coverage gaps.

• Provides backup coverage for staff absences within the PACU and surgical services area as needed.

• Participates in occasional weekend shift and rotating holiday coverage schedule.

• Coordinates with the Director of Clinical Services and physician team to assess upcoming procedure volume and adjust staffing plans accordingly.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Washington.

• Minimum of 5 years of RN experience in ICU, ER, critical care unit, with meaningful experience in a PACU, perioperative, or ambulatory surgical.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers; ACLS required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

• Minimum of 2-3 years of leadership experience, demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and mentor clinical staff in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

• Strong assessment skills with the ability to recognize and respond to changes in patient condition rapidly.

• Competency in IV therapy, medication administration, and patient monitoring in the perioperative setting.

• Excellent communication skills — written, verbal, and interpersonal — with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, anesthesia providers, and all levels of staff.

• Sound organizational and prioritization skills; able to manage competing demands while maintaining composure and patient focus.

• Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and general comfort with clinical documentation systems.

• Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Previous experience in a supervisory, charge RN, or team lead capacity in a perioperative or ambulatory surgical setting.

• Familiarity with AAAHC accreditation standards and survey preparation.

• Experience in a fertility, reproductive endocrinology, or women's health clinical environment.

• Experience with staff scheduling software and EMR systems used in ambulatory surgical settings.
