Overview

Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. The Payment Partnerships, Strategy & Optimization (PPSO) team plays a critical role in enabling that mission by delivering secure, scalable, compliant, and locally relevant payment experiences to customers worldwide.

We are looking for a Payments Manager to lead payment strategy, execution, and partner management across global markets. This role is responsible for driving payment performance, reducing fraud and chargebacks, optimizing cost of payments, and enabling new payment capabilities across highly complex and fast-growing markets.

This role requires deep payments expertise, strong cross-functional leadership, and the ability to operate effectively across regions, cultures, and regulatory environments.

Responsibilities

Payments Strategy & Performance

  • Own end-to-end payment performance across markets, including authorization rates, chargebacks, fraud, refunds, customer experience, and cost of payments.

  • Define and execute payment strategies aligned with Microsoft's product, commerce, and go-to-market priorities.

  • Use data and analytics to identify performance gaps, quantify impact, and prioritize improvement initiatives.

Payment Partner Management

  • Manage strategic relationships with key payment partners (acquirers, processors, gateways, networks, and local payment method providers), including global partners.

  • Lead commercial negotiations, contract renewals, incentive discussions, and ongoing partner governance.

  • Drive accountability with partners through KPIs, SLAs, performance reviews, and escalation management.

Market Expansion & Localization

  • Lead the launch, optimization, and scaling of local payment methods (e.g., domestic cards, bank transfers, real-time payments, installments).

  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, Legal, broader Finance and Compliance teams to ensure solutions are compliant, resilient, and customer-centric.

  • Represent payments expertise in global initiatives and roadmap planning.

Fraud, Risk & Compliance

  • Partner closely with Risk and Chargeback teams to reduce fraud losses and chargeback exposure across markets.

  • Ensure payment solutions comply with local regulations, network mandates, and Microsoft internal policies.

  • Support incident management, root-cause analysis, and remediation for payment-related issues.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication

  • Act as the primary payments point of contact for regional Stores, Sales, Finance, Engineering, and Customer Support teams.

  • Provide clear, concise updates to leadership on performance trends, risks, and opportunities.

  • Drive alignment across global and regional stakeholders to deliver outcomes at scale.

  • Actively network within the payments industry by representing Microsoft at forums and events, participating in panels and discussions to advocate for the company's interests and drive modernization in the payments space. Cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders—including processors, issuing banks, and other merchants—to further Microsoft's objectives and foster innovation across the payment ecosystem.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business AND 5+ years experience with background in treasury, finance, banking, or accounting OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  7+ years of experience in payments, financial services, fintech, e-commerce, or related domains.
  • Hands-on experience with card payments, acquirers/processors, fraud management, and chargebacks.

  • Experience managing external partners and negotiating commercial and contractual terms.

  • Analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.

  • Proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives in a global organization.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the confidence and presence to represent Microsoft publicly, engage with executives, and effectively translate complex concepts into clear, accessible messages for diverse audiences.

  • Experience working with or within global payment ecosystems.
  • Experience launching or scaling local payment methods in emerging markets.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and scheme requirements across markets.
  • Experience working in large-scale, matrixed technology organizations.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments with competing priorities.

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
