Team Overview

The Payroll Tax team is responsible for ensuring accurate, compliant payroll tax administration across all applicable federal, state, and local jurisdictions. This team partners closely with Payroll Operations, HR, Finance, and third‑party payroll providers to mitigate compliance risk, resolve tax issues, and strengthen payroll controls. The team reports into Payroll / Total Rewards within the broader Human Resources organization. This is a hybrid position and involves regular performance of job responsibilities virtually as well as in-person at an assigned TU office location for a minimum of two days a week.

Role Overview and Core Responsibilities

The Payroll Tax Analyst role exists to provide dedicated in‑house payroll tax expertise and oversight while partnering with an external payroll tax provider.

  • Serve as the primary internal subject‑matter expert for payroll tax compliance and issue resolution
  • Partner with a third‑party provider to monitor payroll tax filings for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness
  • Research, resolve, and track federal, state, and local tax notices, delinquent filings, and discrepancies
  • Manage payroll tax account lifecycle activities including registrations, closures, agency updates, and maintenance
  • Ensure Powers of Attorney (POAs) are current, accurate, and properly maintained
  • Oversee intake, tracking, escalation, and resolution of all payroll tax correspondence
  • Maintain a monthly payroll tax dashboard to track notices, filings, liabilities, and resolution status
  • Ensure timely completion of required labor, regulatory, and compliance reports
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and support enhancements to payroll tax controls and governance
  • This role directly supports compliance integrity, reduces financial and regulatory risk, and strengthens payroll operations.

Required Knowledge and Experiences

  • 3+ years of payroll tax experience — Required to independently manage multi‑jurisdictional payroll tax matters and resolve complex issues
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations — Essential for monitoring compliance, interpreting notices, and ensuring accurate filings
  • Experience supporting multi‑state payroll environments — Necessary due to varied regulatory requirements and agency interactions across jurisdictions
  • Proven experience resolving payroll tax notices and agency inquiries — Critical to minimize penalties, interest, and compliance risk
  • Experience working in a controlled or audit‑focused environment — Supports accuracy, documentation standards, and internal control requirements
  • Equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of a formal degree.

Pay Scale Information:

The U.S. base salary range for this position is $51,700.00 - $75,000.00 annually. *The salary range for this position reflects a reasonable estimate of the range of compensation for this job. At TransUnion, actual compensation is based on careful consideration of additional factors such as (but not limited to) an individual’s education, training, work experience, job-related skill set, location, and industry knowledge, as well as the scope and responsibilities of the position and market considerations. Regular, fulltime non-sales positions may be eligible to participate in TransUnion’s annual bonus plan. Certain positions may be also eligible for long-term incentives and other payments based on applicable company guidance and plan documents.
