Job Summary (Primary function)

We are seeking a highly analytical and proactive Business Data Analyst / PM to join our Program and Portfolio Management team (PMO). This hybrid role is weighted toward business analysis (70–75% of responsibilities) with supporting project management responsibilities in an Agile environment.

The position plays a critical role in delivering business-focused projects that enable enterprise-wide, cross-functional planning across Development, Technical Operations, Regulatory Operations, and Medical Affairs with the overarching goal of achieving fully aligned strategic planning, integrated reporting, and actionable analytics across the R&D portfolio.

An emphasis of this role is on reporting and analytics — ensuring that robust, actionable insights are defined and prioritized at project initiation, with solutions deliberately designed to meet both general business requirements and clearly articulated analytics/reporting needs from the outset.

Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)

Primary Responsibilities:

Business Analysis:

o Lead requirements elicitation and analysis for business-focused initiatives, with particular emphasis on defining reporting and analytics requirements upfront.

o Partner closely with business stakeholders to understand strategic objectives, key performance indicators (KPIs), decision-making needs, and insight gaps — then translate these into clear, prioritized reporting/analytics requirements.

o Initiate projects with a strong analytics-first mindset: identify the critical questions the business needs answered, define target dashboards, reports, metrics, and data flows before detailed solutioning begins.

o Drive solution design that intentionally delivers both core business functionality and high-value, reliable reporting/analytics capabilities.

o Create detailed business requirements, user stories, process flows, data models, and analytics specifications that guide system configuration, data engineering, and PowerBI development work.

Project Management (Supporting Focus in Agile Environment):

o Manage project delivery using Azure DevOps in a sprint-based Agile framework (sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, retrospectives).

o Coordinate cross-functional teams including technical specialists (system configuration/customization), data engineering (data lake, ETL, data quality), PowerBI developers (report/dashboard creation), and business stakeholders (training, adoption, communication).

o Track progress, manage risks/dependencies, and ensure deliverables meet both functional business needs and defined reporting/analytics objectives.

Reporting & Analytics Leadership:

o Serve as the primary advocate for analytics and reporting excellence within projects.

o Work with stakeholders to establish success criteria that include measurable improvements in insight availability, data accuracy, timeliness, and usability of reports/dashboards.

o Collaborate closely with data engineering and PowerBI teams to ensure end-to-end data flows support the agreed analytics vision.

o Facilitate validation of reporting outputs during user acceptance testing (UAT) to confirm business and analytical requirements are fully met.

Stakeholder Engagement & Change Enablement:

o Build strong partnerships with business leaders, portfolio managers, and functional teams to align priorities and ensure analytics/reporting needs are understood and championed.

o Develop and deliver training, user guides, and communication plans to drive adoption of new/enhanced reporting capabilities and system functionality.

General Project Management & Business Analysis Duties:

o Support change management, UAT coordination, and post-implementation reviews focused on both operational success and realization of reporting/analytics benefits.

o Contribute to continuous improvement of Agile practices, portfolio management utilization, and overall analytics maturity within the Strategic Portfolio and Project Management team.

Skills Required:

o Demonstrated experience defining and driving analytics/reporting requirements from project inception through delivery.

o Solid understanding of Agile methodologies and proficiency with Azure DevOps.

o Experience working with data engineering teams, data lakes, and visualization tools (PowerBI highly preferred).

o Excellent requirements elicitation, analytical thinking, stakeholder management, and communication skills.

Other Skills:

o Strong business acumen with a natural orientation toward data-driven insights and measurable business outcomes.

o Proactive, organized, and able to manage complexity across multiple stakeholders and technical teams.

o Excellent communicator who can translate complex analytics/reporting needs into clear requirements and vice versa.

Additional Skills Preferred:

o Certifications: CBAP, PMI-PBA, PMP, Agile/Scrum (CSM/PSM), or BI-related certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate).

o Prior experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or regulated R&D environments (clinical, regulatory, medical affairs domains).

o Familiarity with data modeling, ETL concepts, and dashboard/report design principles.

Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

  •         Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Social/Physical/Life Science, Information Systems, Analytics, Project Management, Business, or related field and Minimum three (3) years’ experience in data analytics
  •         4–6+ years of experience in business analysis, with at least 2 years in a role with significant focus on reporting, analytics, and/or business intelligence.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
