To achieve this goal, the Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering (CHSE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.  

We are looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer, AI Hardware to join the team.

Responsibilities
  • Understand customer requirements and high-level architectural design, lead electrical design execution at system level, responsible for detailed design specifications. 

  • Drive internal design collaboration among different teams (thermal, mechanical, firmware, OS), guide external partner (ODM/OEM) for detailed design implementation, ensure product functionality, performance, quality and reliability. 

  • Responsible for complete and deep design review, including schematics, board files, BOM, DFT, DFM, etc. 

  • Work with team members to define board level bring-up and electrical test requirements, ensure complete coverage, execute or guarantee execution. 

  • Work with partner teams to create system level bring-up and end-to-end validation test plans, ensure complete coverage, guarantee execution. 

  • Troubleshooting, issue triage, leading hardware related debug efforts with partner teams, drive resolution and bug reports. 


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with high volume hardware production in server area 
  • 10+ years of relevant hands-on experience in system (compute, storage, networking, and/or accelerator) level design and/or implementation across the hardware development lifecycle 

  • Experience with high-speed and high-power products design 

  • 10+ years’ experience developing board and system level bring-up and test plans 

  • Experience executing hardware validation and functional test plans 

  • 10+ years’ experience debugging board and system level issues for Cloud Servers 

  • Ability to work across multiple disciplines (hardware, firmware, software, and/or data center infrastructure) to identify risks, drive discussions, detail system tradeoffs, and assess impact 

  • Excellent team player 

  • Knowledge about datacenters & operations at scale 

  • Experience with highspeed interfaces such as PCIe, DDR, and ethernet. 

  • In-depth experience with operating systems (Windows and/or Linux), system firmware (BIOS, BMC), and system security (hardware and software) 

  • Proven verbal and written communication and presentation skills 
 

Electrical Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
