Overview

As a Principal Software Engineer on the Microsoft Security Exposure Management (MSEM) team, you'll help build the platform that empowers every organization to see, understand, and reduce their security risk before attackers can exploit it. Sitting at the heart of Microsoft Security's Securing AI pillar, you'll design and ship the services that continuously discover assets, map attack paths, quantify exposure, and help drive remediation across an increasingly AI-driven threat landscape. You'll write production code across the full stack, tackle problems of scale and data richness that few environments can offer, and partner closely with other organizations to ensure customers can adopt AI confidently and securely. This role is a rare opportunity to grow as an engineer while directly advancing Microsoft Security's mission to make the world a safer place.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

    • Design and ship features end-to-end in our scalable, high-throughput distributed systems.
    • Own your components from design discussion through deployment, and learning what it takes to run services reliably in production at Microsoft scale.
    • Own the quality, performance, and operational health of what you build, using strong testing, telemetry, and thoughtful error handling so defenders can trust the exposure insights we deliver.
    • Contribute to shaping the scope and technical direction of your projects by helping turn ambiguous problems in attack-path analysis, asset discovery, and AI-driven risk into well-defined, achievable actions.
    • Collaborate across teams to reach shared goals and growing into an engineer others rely on for support and clear thinking.
    • Work at the leading edge of Securing AI, gaining hands-on experience with the novel security challenges of an AI-driven threat landscape and the massive, rich datasets that make MSEM a rare place to grow as an engineer.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

    • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.

Qualifications: Other Requirements

    • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
    • 6+ years designing, building, and operating scalable cloud services or distributed systems (Azure/AWS/GCP) with production ownership and CI/CD integration.
    • 6+ years programming in C, Java, Go, or Python.
    • 8+ years developing high-throughput, multi-tenant services with strong fundamentals in concurrency, resiliency, error handling, testing, and maintainability.
    • Experience with live-site operations, telemetry/monitoring, incident response, and performance optimization of production systems.
    • Experience with large-scale data processing or pipelines (e.g., Kusto/Azure Data Explorer, Spark, or similar) to turn high-volume signal into actionable insight.
    • Familiarity with security engineering concepts (authentication, data protection, access control, secure coding) and/or interest in AI/ML and the security challenges of AI systems.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
