Process Mechanical Engineer

Brown and Caldwell (BC), a leading, employee-owned environmental engineering firm, is currently seeking a Process Mechanical Engineer to join our Design Services National Mechanical Discipline team. The ideal candidate will have proven strength in process mechanical engineering design of water and wastewater treatment processes, process piping systems, aeration, pumping / hydraulics analysis, and pipe supports as it pertains to industrial plant design of equipment, piping and controls for industrial water treatment applications (e.g., wastewater, reclaimed, potable water, groundwater, zero liquid discharge and surface water) for a variety of industries including: energy/chemicals/power, food/pharmaceutical, manufacturing, mining/solids waste and technology.

The Process Mechanical Engineering role will take on responsibilities in the design and construction phase support of process-mechanical elements in environmental infrastructure projects. The role will lead simple and provide assistance for complex discrete process-mechanical elements in the conceptual design, preliminary design, and final design phases. Duties include preparing calculations to size and select equipment, piping, and piping ancillaries. The role will lead simple and help lead complex coordination of interdisciplinary efforts with architects, structural engineers, electrical and instrumentation and controls engineers, and building-mechanical engineers to develop final design drawings and specifications for process-mechanical elements. The role will also help direct BIM professionals in creating complex 3D models for construction contract drawings for process-mechanical elements. The role will perform submittal reviews, respond to contractor inquiries, and provide site observations for process mechanical elements during the construction phase.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design of simple process-mechanical elements.
• Lead in preparing simple calculations for and selection of piping and equipment as per project requirements.
• Lead the coordination of interdisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive solutions for simple design elements.
• Lead the guidance of BIM professionals for creating accurate and efficient 3D models and contract design documents for simple design elements.
• Lead the review of simple construction phase submittals to ensure adherence to project specifications.
• Lead the response to simple contractor requests for information during the construction phase.
• Lead site observations during the construction phase for simple design elements.
• Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Mentorship

• May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.

Skills and Competencies

• Proficient use of word processing and spreadsheet-based software tools.
• Intermediate understanding of process mechanical engineering principles and practices.
• Intermediate analytical skills in evaluating and designing processes for infrastructure projects.
• Basic use of process-mechanical software analysis tools.
• Ability to work well with interdisciplinary teams.
• Basic understanding of the construction process for environmental infrastructure projects.

Experience

• Typically requires minimum of 2 years of process mechanical engineering or related experience.
• Experience in coordinating with interdisciplinary teams required.
• Typically will become certified in BC's Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) Framework and progress through the SMS competencies.

Preferred Experience

• 4+ years of process mechanical engineering or related experience.
• Prior design experience with pumping, water and wastewater treatment equipment, aeration and plant air compressor/blowers, piping system design, pressure control/relief, and development of technical specifications.
• Strong project or task management skills.
• Successful technical writing skills.
• Knowledgeable of AFT Fathom and Visual Hydraulics software applications and use.
• Experience working in BIM collaboration tools (BIM 360 and Navisworks).

Education

• A bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering or related field or equivalent experience is required.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) License.

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.  These ranges may be modified in the future.  

Location A: $78,000 - $106,000
Location B: $85,000 - $116,000
Location C: $93,000 - $127,000
