About Mending

Mending is a team of healthcare nerds, software engineers, product designers, direct primary care doctors, health insurance experts, and more. We are building a healthcare system that makes sense, starting by redefining the role of health insurance – one that focuses on reducing friction for doctors and patients, and investing in ways to create more meaningful doctor-patient relationships. We are excited to create health insurance plans you can actually use and are looking for values-aligned individuals to join our early stage team.

Overview

We’re looking for a motivated and impact-oriented Product Engineer to join our small team of 5. Your primary focus will be building data pipelines and backend systems that automate and improve workflows for patients, providers, and internal operations. You will be instrumental in ensuring seamless interactions from efficient patient support and operational workflows to reliable payment processing, which are powered by the robust systems you design and implement. As a key contributor, you will partner closely with internal stakeholders and external customers, translating insights into product requirements documents that directly drive your work.

As a core contributor, you will:

  • Work closely with mission-driven teammates to ship high-quality features

  • Communicate technical ideas clearly and thoughtfully

  • Embrace feedback from users and stakeholders to iterate quickly

  • Contribute to a culture of learning and growth

  • Tackle complex, ambiguous problems with curiosity and creativity

You will help build the next generation of intelligent healthcare tools, contribute to projects that impact patients, providers, and teams, and work in an environment that values iteration and autonomy.

Responsibilities
  • Design & Development
Build scalable, reliable backend systems and data pipelines for healthcare workflows that touch provider and patient data. You are expected to ship code on a daily basis alongside the rest of the team.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with teams across Operations, Engineering, and Sales to understand workflows, uncover pain points, define automation opportunities, and ensure alignment on goals and outcomes.

  • Rapid Prototyping
Create and iterate on functional prototypes to test ideas and refine user experience.

  • Maintainability & Scaling
Write clean, extensible code that supports both short-term MVPs and long-term growth.

QualificationsWe are looking for someone who has
  • 5+ years of professional software experience

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate both technical thinking and interpersonal feedback

  • Interest in the U.S. healthcare system and its complexities

  • Systems thinking mindset with a focus on clear and performant data pipeline design and scalable backend systems

  • Ability to prototype quickly and refactor for production

Bonus points
  • Startup experience or worked on open source side projects

  • Familiarity with Python, Flask, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL, React, and/or Next.js

  • Experience with building ETLs, scaling platforms that power backend APIs, and working with large datasets

  • Experience in healthcare or with EHRs and vendor integrations

What We Offer
  • Remote or hybrid work setup

  • Flexible Paid Time Off

  • Multiple annual onsite events in NYC and key markets

You will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
