Senior Data Engineer – Semantic Layer & Analytics Platforms

The Data & Analytics Engineering team is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Data Engineer with a passion for semantic layer development and analytics enablement. As a technical leader, you will design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines and advanced semantic models that power analytics, data products, and operational reporting across our organization.

What You Bring to Cambia:

Preferred Key Experience:

Experienced technical leader with a strong background in building and optimizing data pipelines, excellent SQL skills, and hands‑on expertise with Snowflake, dbt, and modern ELT practices.  Adept at breaking down work, mentoring Data Engineers, and delivering scalable, high‑quality data solutions in complex enterprise environments.

Experience developing, implementing, refining, and troubleshooting semantic layers.

We strongly prefer candidates with a broad range of experience—such as that gained through consulting roles or cross-functional project work—who can bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to our data ecosystem.

Qualifications and Certifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Mathematics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field

  • 3+ years relevant experience in a multi-platform environment, including, but not limited to application development or database development

  • At least 1 year working with Snowflake or similar cloud data platforms

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Skills and Attributes (Not limited to):  

  • Technical Expertise: Proven experience building and optimizing data pipelines and semantic layers in complex enterprise environments.

  • Semantic Layer Design: Experience designing semantic layers and related database artifacts, including entities, relationships, dimensions, facts, metrics.

  • Semantic Layer Engineering Expertise: Demonstrated hands-on expertise with at least one of the following: Snowflake semantic views, AtScale semantics, dbt semantics, Microstrategy Architect / Semantic Graph, or Business Objects Universes.

  • Data Platform Skills: Advanced proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and ELT/ETL design patterns; strong experience with Snowflake and dbt.

  • Consulting Mindset: A track record of delivering high-impact data solutions across a variety of industries or business domains, with the ability to adapt quickly to new environments and requirements.

  • Collaboration: Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (business, product, engineering, governance, quality assurance).

  • Orchestration & Automation: Familiarity with orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow) and version-controlled development workflows (CI/CD, DevOps/DataOps).

  • Data Governance: Strong understanding of data governance, security, and compliance in large-scale data environments.

  • Healthcare Experience: Experience in healthcare or other highly regulated industries is a plus.

  • Preferred Additional Experience:

    • Ideally, 6+ years of experience in Data Engineering or Data Platform Engineering roles, preferably with senior or lead responsibilities.

    • Experience with metadata management, streaming data, and building semantic layers for analytics self-service

    • Python development skills, especially for data engineering or automation tasks

    • Experience integrating semantic layers with BI and analytics tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker)

What You Will Do at Cambia (Not limited to):   

  • Establish Standards: Drive engineering standards and best practices for semantic layer and data platform development.

  • Implement Enterprise Semantic Models: Design, build, optimize, and maintain semantic data models and database layers on Snowflake based on specifications from the Semantic Data Architect and Data Product Owner, using tools such as Snowflake semantic views, Cortex Analyst, stored procedures, and dbt.

  • Data Pipeline Development: Design, build, optimize, automate, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and data products, ensuring high data quality and platform observability.

  • Performance Tuning: Optimize Snowflake queries and data structures (e.g., tables, views, materialized views) to ensure high performance for semantic data access.

  • Data Quality and Validation: Implement data quality checks and validation processes to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the semantic layer.

  • Collaboration: Work with data product owners, business analysts, the semantic data architect, data modelers, and data engineers to create and refine data models and troubleshoot issues.

  • Automation and Monitoring: Automate semantic layer maintenance tasks and set up monitoring to ensure system reliability and performance.

  • Quality and Governance: Ensure thorough testing, documentation, and adherence to data governance, security, and compliance standards

  • Platform Evolution: Assess and adopt new Snowflake features as they are released.

The expected hiring range for The Senior Data Engineer is $115k–$135k/year depending on skills, experience, education, and training; relevant licensure / certifications; performance history; and work location. The bonus target for this position is 15%.  The current full salary range for the this position is $104k - $171K/year.
