Overview

At Microsoft, our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. That mission comes to life through the devices people use every day, and is represented in our Surface and Xbox products. Our Microsoft Devices Operations (MDO) organization leverages engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to produce, deliver, and service hardware at scale.

We are hiring a Senior Design for Manufacturing Engineer to help deliver on MDO’s strategy to “Make it. Ship it. Love it.” This role exists at the intersection of product design and factory execution.  It leverages product knowledge, robust engineering methods, and continual improvement mindset to deliver on our operational objectives of cost, quality, and scale.

People who thrive in this role are curious systems thinkers who challenge assumptions and influence product design early. They combine broad technical knowledge across product design and manufacturing with effective engineering judgment to anticipate risk, simplify complexity, and identify opportunities to improve manufacturability, quality, cost, automation, and scalability. They excel at navigating ambiguity, influencing without authority, and bringing cross-functional teams together to influence design decisions.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership for complex New Product Introduction (NPI) and product development programs, influencing product architecture and design decisions early in the development cycle to optimize manufacturability, quality, cost, repairability, scalability, and product experience.
  • Drive Design for Excellence (DFX) strategies across cross-functional teams, partnering with Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Design, Reliability, Quality, Materials, and Global Manufacturing organizations to shape product designs and establish robust engineering requirements, standards, and best practices.
  • Lead advanced Design for Manufacturing/Design for Assembly (DFM/DFA) and risk-reduction efforts, identifying opportunities to simplify product architecture, improve design robustness, enable automation, and proactively characterize and mitigate risks associated with new technologies, materials, processes, and system-level design features.
  • Apply deep engineering expertise and analytical methods to solve complex mechanical and electro-mechanical challenges, leveraging modeling, statistical analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design for Six Sigma, and process capability analysis to guide critical product decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Champion organizational DFX capability and manufacturing excellence, developing DFX design standards, requirements, and best practices; translating manufacturing capabilities and process variation into product design requirements; collaborating with global suppliers and manufacturing partners; communicating technical recommendations and tradeoffs to senior stakeholders; and mentoring engineers to scale DFX expertise across the organization.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 5+ years experience in engineering, manufacturing, operations, hardware development
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 6+ years experience in engineering, manufacturing, operations, hardware development.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 8+ years experience in engineering, manufacturing, operations, hardware development.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
    • OR equivalent certifications.
  • Experience in product design and/or manufacturing engineering for high-volume consumer electronics or other electro-mechanical hardware, including parts and assemblies such as enclosures, mechanisms, thermal solutions, and PCBAs.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing product architecture for automation (automated assembly, test or repair), partnering with design, factory, and automation teams to ensure manufacturability and scalability.
  • Track record of leading DFX or design for manufacturing readiness across the full NPI lifecycle (concept through production ramp), driving cross-functional and cross-team projects to closure.
  • Applied experience with Design for Six Sigma and statistical methods (DOE, tolerance analysis, process capability), with working knowledge of CAD and DFM analysis tools such as Creo, Valor, or Cadence Allegro.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted partnerships and influence without authority across Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Design, Reliability, Quality, Supply Chain, and global manufacturing partners and suppliers. Communicates complex technical risks and tradeoffs clearly and adapts the message from engineers and factory teams up to senior executives. Turns data into concise recommendations that drive timely, informed decisions.
