Job Description:

Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Senior Drainage Engineer to join our growing Stormwater Team for the East-Central United States area and to support critical infrastructure projects across the nation. In this role, you’ll work in a flexible, team-oriented environment, performing drainage and stormwater design on high‑impact transportation projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that is shaping the future of mobility, safety, and resilience in our communities.

You’ll be backed by the resources of a global firm and a culture that values technical excellence, ownership, and growth—while enjoying flexibility, strong benefits, and opportunities to advance your career as a technical lead and project leader.

Why This Role is Different

  • High impact & visibility: Take ownership of complex drainage and stormwater designs that directly improve safety, mobility, and sustainability on major transportation projects.

  • Technical leadership: Serve as a go‑to drainage expert, leading design efforts and guiding junior staff in best practices and modern tools.

  • Collaboration & variety: Work closely with roadway, environmental, structural, utilities, and other disciplines on a diverse mix of projects, including alternative project delivery (design‑build, CM/GC) work.

  • Career growth: Build your profile with client interaction, proposal and business development support, and opportunities to grow into broader leadership roles.

What You’ll Be Doing

You will work with the East-Central Stormwater Team in the planning and design of drainage systems with an emphasis on stormwater quantity and stormwater quality systems for major infrastructure projects, with responsibilities that may include:

Technical design & analysis

  • Prepare hydraulic and hydrologic calculations for storm drains, detention facilities, culverts, water quality (BMP/LID) features, and other related items.

  • Develop storm drain plans, profiles, details, and specifications.

  • Prepare erosion & sediment control plans, calculations for storage facilities, including temporary sediment basins, and other related items.

  • Prepare stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) reports for project permitting.

  • Apply standard DOT and/or local agency regulations for drainage, hydraulic, and hydrology standards and practices in your designs.

Leadership & coordination

  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment to help deliver infrastructure design projects within the East-Central area and major infrastructure projects nationally.

  • Work as part of the East-Central area Stormwater Team or lead design efforts for local projects as well as segments of larger alternative project delivery projects.

  • Coordinate with counterparts in other design disciplines (roadway, structural, utilities, etc.) to develop comprehensive, integrated project designs.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff in standard engineering practices and methodologies, including CAD modeling software for drainage and stormwater engineering.

Quality, client interface & business support

  • Implement quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) standard practices to ensure accurate, constructible designs.

  • Interface with clients to address review comments, design issues, and constraints, acting as a trusted technical resource.

  • Support and participate in proposal and business development activities, bringing forward innovative drainage and stormwater solutions.

What You’ll Bring (Required)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or related field) and typically 8+ years of related work experience.

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE/EIT) Certification and ability to obtain a PE license.

  • Experience in structural and non-structural stormwater quantity and stormwater quality design directly related to transportation projects.

  • Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, and/or Civil 3D.

Desired / Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.

  • Experience with hydraulic/hydrologic modeling tools, including (but not limited to):

  • Bentley PondPack

  • Bentley OpenFlows Flowmaster

  • HydroCAD

  • HEC-HMS

  • SWMM Modeling (e.g., EPA‑SWMM, PC‑SWMM)

  • WinTR-55, Hydraulic Toolbox, among others

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

  • Experience writing drainage reports for transportation projects.

  • Demonstrated experience leading drainage design

  • Experience working on Alternative Project Delivery (design‑build, CM/GC) projects.

  • Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for technical quality, schedule, and coordination.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
