Position Summary:

athenahealth is seeking a Senior Manager, Content Production to lead hands-on content creation and subject-matter ownership for Revenue Cycle Management (RCM). This person will own the RCM content roadmap within the broader editorial strategy and will write the majority of RCM content, with particular emphasis on blogs and eBooks. Beyond RCM, this person will flex into related solution areas, including Value-Based Care and Payer, Interoperability, and Patient Experience, as business priorities and content needs evolve.

This is a senior individual-contributor role for an accomplished healthcare technology writer who can develop deep RCM fluency, build trusted relationships with internal subject-matter experts, and translate complex topics into clear, authoritative content for a range of audiences and specialties. The role reports to the Senior Manager, Editorial Content and partners closely with Product and Portfolio Marketing, Brand, and Integrated Marketing across a highly cross-functional, matrixed organization.

About the Team:

The content team develops strategic, story-driven content aligned with audience needs, buyer journey stages, and go-to-market priorities. The team uses a newsroom-style beat model: each beat owner develops subject-matter depth, cultivates expert relationships, and takes responsibility for the quality, relevance, and ongoing development of content in that domain, while remaining adaptable enough to support adjacent beats when priorities shift.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Own the RCM beat and its content roadmap within the broader editorial strategy, serving as this beat's primary owner.
  • Flex into adjacent solution areas, such as Value-Based Care and Payer, Interoperability, and Patient Experience, as needed, developing working fluency quickly enough to produce credible, well-informed content on short notice.
  • Develop deep fluency in athenahealth's RCM solutions, customer needs, market context, and go-to-market priorities; become the content team's trusted RCM subject-matter owner.
  • Write athenahealth’s RCM content, with a primary focus on high-quality blogs and eBooks that support audiences across the funnel.
  • Conduct interviews, review data, and perform research to develop accurate, useful, and compelling content grounded in genuine subject-matter depth, across RCM and adjacent domains as assigned.
  • Tailor content approach and voice for a variety of audiences and specialties, including Specialties, Enterprise, Small Group, and Group segments.
  • Serve as a content consultant for related landing pages, emails, and webinars, helping partners maintain narrative consistency and editorial quality.
  • Create clear, well-scoped briefs for freelance writers when additional support is needed, and review their work for accuracy, quality, and alignment.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate stakeholder review and approval cycles across a highly matrixed, cross-functional organization, track feedback and decisions, and keep partners informed of content status and next steps.
  • Partner with Product and Portfolio Marketing, Brand, and Integrated Marketing to connect content with messaging, campaigns, and go-to-market initiatives across RCM and adjacent solution areas.
  • Apply SEO and AI search optimization practices, including AIO, LLMO, and GEO, to content planning, briefs, and execution.
  • Use performance insights supplied by reporting partners to refine topic selection, formats, and future content plans.
  • Conduct periodic audits of RCM (and, as needed, adjacent domain) content to identify gaps, overlaps, refresh opportunities, and priorities for new content
  • undefined

Expected Education & Experience:

  •  8-10 years of experience in content marketing, editorial, journalism, or professional writing roles, including substantial experience creating long-form B2B content.
  • Healthcare industry experience required; direct experience with RCM strongly preferred. Familiarity with Value-Based Care and Payer, Interoperability, or Patient Experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated success operating in a highly cross-functional, stakeholder-heavy, matrixed organization, coordinating input and approvals across multiple teams without direct authority.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to turn complex, technical, or regulated subject matter into polished, accessible content.
  • A strong portfolio that includes long-form business content such as blogs, eBooks, guides, reports, or case studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop genuine subject-matter expertise quickly across more than one domain, and to build productive relationships with internal experts and cross-functional partners.
  • Proven ability to flex tone, depth, and format for different audiences and specialties (e.g., Enterprise vs. Small Group, general vs. specialty-specific).
  • Working knowledge of SEO and AI search optimization practices and how they inform content planning and execution.
  • Strong judgment, organization, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and produce high-quality work in a changing environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing, communications, or a related field.

Expected Compensation

$96,000 - $162,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
