Designs and develops robotic mechanical systems, mechanisms, actuators, transmissions, end-effectors, and integrated electromechanical subsystems. Responsibilities include requirements translation, architecture, component selection, SolidWorks assemblies and drawings, tolerance analysis, prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and design release. The engineer presents tradeoffs and technical risks while coordinating with electrical, firmware, software, and systems teams. This is a hands-on, on-site role requiring at least eight years of product-development experience.
Senior Mechanical and Robotics Design Engineer
POSITION DESCRIPTION
WHAT YOU’LL BUILD AND OWN
- Translating system needs into clear requirements, architectures, and interfaces
- Sizing and selecting motors, gearboxes, encoders, bearings, and drivetrain or transmission components
- Developing moving mechanisms—from linkages and gear trains to belts, pulleys, and cables
- Designing specialized end-effectors
- Solving tight packaging challenges by integrating sensors, wiring, PCBs, and related electronics
- Creating and managing complex SolidWorks assemblies, configurations, BOMs, and ASME Y14.5 drawings within a PDM-controlled revision workflow.
- Designing custom and semi-custom parts for machining, sheet metal, injection molding, 3D printing, and other prototype or production processes
- Helping the client make informed decisions by clearly presenting design tradeoffs, technical risks, and recommendations
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- 8+ years of applicable product-development experience
- Experience with robotic actuation and mechanisms, including motor/transmission selection and kinematic or dynamic analysis
- SolidWorks expertise spanning complex assemblies, configurations, production drawings, and PDM-controlled revision workflows
- Availability to work on-site at the Seattle-area client location
EXPERIENCE THAT WILL HELP YOU STAND OUT
Bring additional depth in any of these areas:
- A track record of owning at least one robotic or complex electro-mechanical subsystem from requirements and architecture through detailed design, working hardware, validation testing, and design release
- Design of test fixtures, test instruments, or automated mechanical test equipment
- Development of custom actuator or drivetrain solutions, internally or with external vendors
- Strong command of GD&T (ASME Y14.5), tolerance analysis, and DFM/DFA, backed by practical knowledge of low-volume and production manufacturing methods
- The ability to move confidently between design and the test bench, with hands-on experience in prototype assembly, instrumentation, testing, troubleshooting, and system-level root-cause analysis
- Experience integrating complex mechanical designs with electrical, firmware, software, and systems engineering disciplines
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- Base salary: $140K–$160K, depending on years of experience and skill sets.
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage with employee premiums fully paid by the company and partial payment for dependents
- 401(k) plan with company match after 1,000 hours of service
- Long-term and short-term disability, AD&D, and life insurance
