The Position

Roche Diagnostics acquired Stratos Genomics (SBX Nanopore Sequencing) in 2020 for its novel Sequencing by eXpansion (SBX™) technology. SBX™ uses unique applications from chemistry, biochemistry, electrochemistry, and protein engineering to sequence DNA by nanopore in rapid time with high accuracy and low cost.
 

The SBX Sequencing team is devoted to developing our high throughput, low-cost DNA sequencing approach into an industry  disrupting product that will facilitate the care that patients need. We are looking for individuals who are motivated to reach towards  elevating performance of a complex system and are excited to join a dynamic research and development team. The successful  candidate will be ready and willing to take on challenges, match the energy of our dedicated team, able to take on the work  demands of our long workdays, and is able to work closely with team mates to accomplish complex tasks.

The Opportunity

  • Execute defined sequencing experiments that advance research and development efforts on our multifaceted nanopore-based sequencing platform.

  • Use technical and theoretical understandings to propose and execute high quality laboratory experiments. 

  • Diligently details processes and findings in a well organized and timely manner. 

  • Communicates actively and effectively with supervisor on project status, significant  findings, critical problem areas, and pathways forward.

  • Support management decisions and goals in a positive, professional manner. Embrace priorities and responsibilities set forth  by management.

  • Collaboratively work with manager and colleagues to explore alternative approaches to solve problems and find solutions. Make data-driven recommendations to solve problems with feasible solutions.

  • Analyze and interpret experimental data using various data analysis methods (e.g., Excel, Python scripts). Summarizes experimental results with a keen observational eye to anomalies, deviations and new paths of inquiry. Reviews conclusions with supervisor and project leaders. 

  • Use technical writing/presentation skills to produce comprehensive & concise reports/documents in a timely manner. When needed, effectively present findings to team members and senior management.

  • Prepare, validate, and track performance of critical components and reagents of the sequencing system. Produce sequencing kits for internal and external usage that yields high performance results.

  • Requires minimal guidance to manage tasks and work time responsibly. Take personal accountability to deliver on assigned tasks promptly. 

  • Assumes accountability for electronic lab notebook documentation, ensuring experimental methods and results are recorded timely, accurately, consistently, and according to established formats.

  • Suggests effective and feasible solutions to complex sequencing problems and workflow inefficiencies.

  • Develops and maintains databases to track performance, experimental conditions, and research findings.

  • Participates in routine lab maintenance, lab safety, ISO, and QSR implementation.

  • Maintain performance of and troubleshoot issues encountered while working on laboratory instruments.

  • Assist in maintaining laboratory organization and cleanliness

Who You Are:   

  • You have a B.S. in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Protein Engineering, or related field with 5 years of laboratory experience in the biotech industry or a research laboratory 

  • You have Python coding experience and have demonstrated application in the laboratory

  • You have a mastery of basic laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting, sterile technique, solution preparation, etc.)

  • You have experience with typical bioinformatics tools (e.g. BLAST, Clustal, PyMOL)

  • You are comfortable with standard molecular biology techniques, mutagensis, purification methods, analytics

  • You are familiar working with Apple, Microsoft, & Linux operating systems

  • You have an ability to design informative and feasible laboratory experiments with appropriate controls

  • You are able to recognize problems in an experimental outcome and troubleshoot accordingly

  • You are able to explain complex concepts to coworkers and management

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Seattle, WA is $79,000-138,200 Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
