Senior Scientific Program Manager – Shared Resources

The new Shared Resources umbrella will encompass functions vital to the Institute's success, specifically focusing on both cutting-edge Innovation and essential Data Generation with operational excellence and actively responding to evolving scientific needs. By sharing these resources, we aim to streamline processes, leverage institutional expertise, and ensure that our scientific platforms and data pipelines are consistent, efficient, and scalable across all shared resources. This change is expected to unlock new synergies, and ultimately enhance the speed and impact of the Allen Institute's world-class research efforts.

The Senior Scientific Program Manager is an important role within Shared Resources, with a significant impact on the strategic direction of this emerging department. Reporting into Shared Resources Leadership, you’ll drive the development of internal and external program portfolios aligned with our long-term goals. Your expertise in process implementation and managing research collaborations will be instrumental in advancing our scientific mission. Additionally, you’ll coordinate with program managers and platform leaders, ensuring seamless execution of programmatic goals and fostering effective communication with internal and external partners.

Essential Functions

  • Partner with Shared Resources Leadership and collaborate across the various Allen Institutes accelerators to advocate for and implement the operational structure of Shared Resources
  • Support development and implementation of processes for managing internal and external research collaborations
  • Maintain clear and consistent channels of communication and documentation with collaborators and internal stakeholders
  • Lead program and project teams to deliver on programmatic and project goals through planning and execution phases, using project management best practices and tools
  • Partner with scientific staff to assist with the development of task management systems, and prospective and retrospective reviews
  • Support execution of projects in audit-compliant fashion including contracts, sub-awardees, budget tracking/variance reporting, prior approval requests, carry forward requests, and agency reporting
  • Lead project teams through business relevant processes including goal setting, budgeting (forecasting and monitoring), and progress reporting. Facilitate and support preparations for internal and external program reviews
  • Partner with the Scientific Operations director in implementing metrics for tracking the success and impact of projects and programs

Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. degree in biology, biomedical science, neuroscience, or related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of five years’ progressive relevant post-PhD experience
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex scientific programs or projects
  • Advanced ability to translate scientific and technical subject matter into concise, clear communications that are understood by technical and non-technical leaders and constituents
  • Proficient in the use of program and project management, collaboration management, communication, and dashboard/reporting tools

Preferred Education and Experience

  • PhD in the biological sciences or other scientific discipline with greater than ten years progressive relevant post-PhD experience
  • Experience as a program officer or manager
  • Experience interacting with federal funding agencies and developing successful applications for external research funding
  • Demonstrated leadership presence with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, foster productive team dynamics, and partnereffectively across scientific, technical, and business interfaces at all levels of an organization
  • Proven strategic thinker with the ability to solve complex problems and lead in identification and implementation of potential solutions
  • Strong financial acumen, adept at managing budgets, and monitoring performance metrics.
  • Proven ability to set priorities, maintain focus on big picture and navigate competing demands
  • Demonstrated resilience and adaptability; experience supporting team through change and applying change management best practices

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.

Annualized Salary Range

  • $156,850 - $196,050*

* Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
