Overview

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Microsoft 365 Fleet Innovation team, the group building the platform that puts the right infrastructure in the right places at the right time for Microsoft 365 workloads. Fleet Innovation sits at the center of the capacity lifecycle, turning capacity demand into production-ready infrastructure that powers some of Microsoft’s largest cloud services.

In this role, you will design and build the systems that move capacity from demand signal to Live, tackling challenges in distributed systems, infrastructure orchestration, and automation across the end-to-end lifecycle. The scope spans capacity and supply signal intake, Azure resource provisioning, infrastructure prerequisites, validation, allocation, deallocation, and live fleet operations. You will own meaningful areas of the architecture, work across service and organizational boundaries, and use automation, data, and AI to make capacity delivery and fleet operations faster, safer, and increasingly autonomous.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and deliver scalable software and services that automate M365 capacity delivery from supply chain and capacity signals through provisioning, validation, and decommissioning.

  • Develop automation and intelligent workflows that simplify complex infrastructure processes, reduce manual operations, and improve the speed and reliability of capacity delivery.

  • Explore and apply AI and other emerging technologies where they can improve engineering efficiency, operational decision making, troubleshooting, and automation.

  • Drive technical design for complex feature areas, making informed trade-offs across scalability, reliability, resiliency, security, performance, and long-term maintainability.

  • Partner with engineers and stakeholders across organizational boundaries to understand requirements, manage dependencies, create technical clarity, and drive solutions.

  • Use telemetry and production data to understand system behavior, identify bottlenecks and failure patterns, and continuously improve service health and operational efficiency.

  • Drive engineering excellence through design and code reviews, automated testing, monitoring, controlled deployments, and operational readiness.

  • Mentor other engineers, share technical knowledge and best practices, and contribute to an inclusive engineering culture where others can succeed.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years technical experience working with large-scale cloud or distributed systems.
  • Experience designing, developing, and delivering production software or distributed systems.
  • Experience designing software for scalability, reliability, resiliency, performance, and operational maintainability.
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or resource provisioning platforms.
  • Experience building automation and orchestration workflows that coordinate complex processes across multiple services, systems, or organizational boundaries.
  • Experience using telemetry and data to identify operational bottlenecks, improve system reliability, and drive engineering decisions.
  • Experience applying AI, machine learning, or AI-assisted development technologies to improve automation, engineering productivity, or operational workflows.
  • Solid technical leadership and communication skills, with experience driving design and execution across multiple engineering teams.
