Job Description:

At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind.
Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money — we're here to move our global customers forward.
We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career — we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.About the Role

The Remitly Transaction Experience (RTE) team owns the systems at the very heart of Remitly: the platform that accepts, orchestrates, and tracks every remittance our customers send. Every transaction, across millions of customers and 175+ countries, flows through RTE services. We provide the transaction gateway, processing, delivery estimates, and search/read surfaces that customer-facing products and internal teams across Remitly build on. On systems where correctness directly affects customers' money, we prioritize reliability and operational excellence at scale.

This is a pivotal moment for the team. Remitly is moving to a future-ready, API-first Transaction Platform that lets diverse product offerings integrate on their own, at scale. You'll help peer teams across Remitly build better transaction experiences on that platform, while operating the Tier-1 systems that Remitly's business runs on today.

As a Senior Software Development Engineer, you'll own one or two key pillars of the transaction experience. From optimizing delivery estimates, which forecast when a customers’ money will arrive using advanced ML models, to building new platform capabilities, you’ll partner with peer teams to build new transaction types that are reliable, transparent, and seamless for our customers. You'll lead the design and delivery of initiatives that span multiple engineers and teams, and raise the bar for quality and operational excellence across the team. You'll work in an AI-forward engineering culture. We expect engineers to use AI tools effectively across coding, testing, debugging, and documentation to move faster, while owning the correctness of everything they ship, and we expect senior engineers to guide peers on using AI responsibly. Verifying and fully understanding AI-assisted output matters even more on systems that move money.

You Will
  • Take technical ownership of an area of the transaction platform and become its subject-matter expert, the person consulted on design, feasibility, and correctness in that space
  • Evolve how Remitly estimates delivery times for customers, improving their accuracy, latency, and reliability
  • Help peer teams move onto the new platform's APIs without interrupting production traffic
  • Own complex, multi-engineer initiatives end to end: clarify requirements, break work into workstreams that can run in parallel, estimate, and guide teammates to on-time delivery
  • Write technical specifications, lead design reviews, and contribute to cross-team technical designs with the teams that build on RTE
  • Deliver idempotent, well-tested, observable, documented, scalable, and resilient services and APIs
  • Own the operational health of your services, including on-call, SLOs, incident response, and root-cause resolution
  • Factor AI-assisted development into estimates, evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability before it ships, and coach peers on responsible AI use
  • Drive task breakdown, estimates, and tradeoff discussions with product managers, and partner with your manager to shape the team's technical direction and roadmap
  • Partner with product managers and engineers across Remitly to understand consumer needs and turn them into reliable technical solutions
  • Mentor engineers through code and design reviews, interviews, and onboarding, and raise the technical bar for the team
You Have
  • A degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years of professional software development building and operating production backend systems
  • 1+ year leading features with multiple engineers, including breaking large, ambiguous work into workstreams others can execute
  • Expertise in Go, Kotlin, or similar languages (Java, Python, C++)
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed backend systems on AWS, including high-throughput, low-latency services
  • Expertise with large-scale database systems such as MySQL and DynamoDB
  • Experience with monitoring (e.g., Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics), CI/CD, and infrastructure tooling, and with improving how systems are deployed, tested, logged, and monitored
  • Experience migrating or decommissioning production systems while they stay in use
  • A track record of technical architecture and system design decisions
  • Experience evaluating AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability, and coaching others on responsible AI use
  • Comfort with ambiguity in requirements and business expectations
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical tradeoffs to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders
Nice to Have
  • Experience with payments, fintech, or other domains where data correctness and auditability are critical
  • Experience with durable workflow orchestration (e.g., Temporal)
