Working in engineering:
Working at Nintex as an engineer means building more than just software; it’s about making a tangible impact with every line of code. Our engineers are process experts, developing the industry’s most complete process and automation platform to transform the way people work. If you’re interested, curious and want to learn and do more, the sky is the limit here. We take a solutions-oriented and collaborative approach, constantly innovating our business and products.
About the role:
The Senior Software Engineer, Platform Engineering is a hands-on individual contributor responsible for designing, building, and shipping capabilities of the internal developer platform and the integrations that connect engineering tools and processes. This role partners with the Engineering Manager and senior peers to turn platform priorities into reliable, well-tested implementations that measurably improve developer productivity and delivery velocity.
You operate with strong autonomy on scoped initiatives, take features end-to-end, and use AI-augmented workflows and automation - including functional and end-to-end testing - as core tools to ship faster without compromising quality. You contribute to design discussions, mentor peers informally, and raise the engineering bar through high-quality code and pragmatic decision-making.
Your contribution will be:
Design & Delivery
- Contribute to the architecture and design of the Backstage-based IDP and its surrounding integrations, with a focus on scalability, security, and long-term maintainability.
- Design and implement golden paths, software templates, and opinionated defaults that reduce developer toil and cognitive load.
- Make and document scoped technical decisions, clearly articulating trade-offs; escalate cross-cutting concerns to senior peers and the Engineering Manager.
- Drive consistency in APIs, plugin patterns, and deployment models across the IDP and integration surfaces.
Hands-on Engineering & Automation
- Build and extend the Backstage-based IDP - plugins, software templates, scaffolder actions, TechDocs, catalog model, and auth providers.
- Build integrations across the engineering toolchain, including:
- Source control, CI/CD, and artifact registries (e.g., GitHub/GitLab, ArgoCD).
- Ticketing, planning, and on-call tooling (e.g., Jira, PagerDuty/Opsgenie).
- Cloud services, identity, observability, and security-scanning tooling.
- Treat automation as a first-class deliverable - including functional and end-to-end test automation (e.g., Playwright or Cypress), CI checks, and operational runbooks expressed as code.
- Operate the services you build: meet defined SLOs/SLIs, participate in incident response, and learn from incidents.
Developer Productivity & Adoption
- Treat internal engineers as customers: actively gather feedback and iterate on usability, workflows, and documentation.
- Improve concrete developer productivity outcomes - lead time, time-to-onboard, time-to-first-PR, and self-service rate - through IDP capabilities and tooling integrations.
- Drive adoption of platform standards and tooling through enablement, clear documentation, and pairing with consumer teams - not mandates.
Collaboration & Ways of Working
- Operate autonomously on scoped initiatives — break down ambiguous problems, sequence delivery, and ship incrementally.
- Use AI-augmented workflows (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, agentic tools) as a daily accelerator; build small automations and agents that remove repetitive work for yourself and the team.
- Partner with the Engineering Manager and senior peers on planning, risk, and delivery trade-offs.
- Support hiring by contributing to technical interviews and helping calibrate expectations for the role.
Required Technical Expertise
- Backstage & IDP
- Production experience building or significantly extending Backstage - plugins, scaffolder templates, catalog, TechDocs, and auth providers.
- Strong TypeScript / Node.js (Backstage stack); comfort with React for plugin frontends.
- Integration Engineering & Cloud-Native
- Designing and building integrations across engineering tools (SCM, CI/CD, ticketing, observability, security scanners) via APIs, webhooks, and event-driven patterns.
- GitOps and Infrastructure as Code (ArgoCD, Terraform); Kubernetes and cloud-native application design; experience operating platforms on Azure and/or AWS.
- AI-Augmented Development
- Demonstrated, daily use of AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or equivalent) and agentic workflows to accelerate delivery - able to show concrete examples.
- Comfort designing prompts, building small agents/automations, and embedding AI into team workflows.
- Test Automation & Reliability
- Hands-on with functional/E2E test design and tooling (Playwright or Cypress), contract testing, and CI integration; operates services with SLO awareness and contributes to incident response.
- Engineering Fundamentals
- Strong software engineering fundamentals; proficient in at least one additional backend language commonly used in platform work (such as Go or Python).
To be successful, we think you need:
- 2+ years experience in leading a team
- 6+ years of strong experience and background in software engineering (Javascript, NodeJS, ReactJS, Relational and Non-Relational Databases)
- Strong experience in Kubernetes & Containerization.
