Join Microsoft Advertising's Billing Platform team and help power one of the company's most business-critical systems. Our platform manages the end-to-end financial lifecycle for advertisers, including invoicing, payments, budget management, revenue processing, financial reporting, and global compliance.

As a Principal Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of highly talented engineers while providing technical leadership for a large-scale, mission-critical platform that processes advertiser spend at global scale. You will drive platform modernization, operational excellence, AI-enabled engineering practices, and innovation in monetization systems, partnering closely with Product, Finance, CRM, Measurement, and Identity teams.

Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.


Responsibilities
  • Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team through coaching, mentoring, hiring, and talent development.
  • Define and execute the technical vision and roadmap for Microsoft's Advertising Billing Platform.
  • Drive the design, architecture, and delivery of scalable services supporting billing, invoicing, payments, financial controls, and reporting.
  • Establish a culture of engineering excellence focused on reliability, security, quality, and operational rigor.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders across Engineering, Product, Finance, and Operations to deliver business-critical capabilities.
  • Leverage AI and automation to improve developer productivity, operational efficiency, and customer support experiences.
  • Manage technical execution for complex multi-team initiatives while balancing short-term delivery with long-term platform investments.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative environment that enables engineers to do their best work and grow their careers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams.
  • Solid background designing and operating large-scale distributed systems and cloud services.
  • Demonstrated success driving architecture decisions and technical strategy across multiple teams.
  • Experience with financial systems, billing, payments, commerce, accounting, or enterprise platforms is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional collaboration, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Passion for building great teams, developing talent, and delivering customer-focused solutions.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
