Overview

Microsoft is a company where passionate innovators come to collaborate, envision what can be and take their careers further. This is a world of more possibilities, more innovation, more openness, and the sky is the limit thinking in a cloud-enabled world.

Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.

Within Microsoft Fabric, the Azure Monitor team builds services that enable customers to monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues with their services through an increasingly agentic experience. Azure Monitor includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and more. Additionally, Azure Monitor is the platform upon which Microsoft Sentinel is built. We have a multi-billion dollar business that is growing rapidly, and we run some of the world’s highest scale observability services both for Microsoft internally and for our external customers, processing over 1.5 Exabytes of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics.

We are hiring a Principal Software Engineering Manager to lead a team focused on Client Telemetry within the broader Observability platform. We build and operate the telemetry systems Microsoft engineers depend on to understand our customer base and run a wide variety of businesses. This role blends technical leadership and people management: setting direction, making practical architecture tradeoffs, improving detection and mitigation, reducing operational toil, and helping the team turn live-site learning into durable engineering improvements. Just as important, you’ll grow the people doing the work, giving engineers clear ownership, raising the quality bar, improving planning and execution, and building the habits that keep critical services trustworthy at Microsoft scale.

We do not just value differences or different perspectives. We seek them out and invite them in so we can tap into the collective power of everyone in the company. As a result, our customers are better served.

Responsibilities
  • Set and communicate the multi-year technical direction for a large-scale observability/telemetry platform, aligning your team's roadmap with Azure Data's reliability, scale, and cost objectives.
  • Lead through other leaders and senior engineers — growing, coaching, and retaining a diverse team, and building the management and technical bench the organization relies on.
  • Own the operational health of high-volume production services, fostering a durable live-site culture where reliability, quality, and customer trust are shared priorities.
  • Advance the security and compliance posture of your services
  • Drive cross-organization initiatives and difficult trade-offs, influencing partner teams and senior stakeholders to deliver outcomes that no single team could achieve alone.
  • Cultivate an inclusive, engineering-driven environment where people do their best work, learn continuously, and adopt modern practices (including AI-assisted development).
  • Embody our culture and values

Qualifications

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency operating large-scale distributed services or data/telemetry pipelines in production
  • Demonstrated experience leading live-site/reliability practices for high-availability cloud services
  • Familiarity with cloud security and compliance programs
  • Experience growing and developing engineering managers and senior/principal engineers
  • Competence partnering across organizational boundaries to deliver shared platform outcomes
  • Working knowledge of observability/monitoring domains (metrics, logs, tracing) is helpful
