About the role:

Remitly's US and Canada Regional Experience teams grow the remittance send business by improving the customer experience across the moments that matter most. Engineers on these teams apply a full-stack skillset to the customer challenges most critical for growing Remitly's US and Canada send business. This Staff Engineer will work across both regional teams, setting the technical direction engineers build on. The US team has ambitious plans targeting Latin America and other critical receive regions, alongside Canada's growth priorities in Asia, which this hire will help drive across both regions.

You will:
  • Own the technical direction and architecture of the US and Canada regional experiences - from customer-facing web and mobile surfaces to the services and integrations they depend on - taking the lead on large, cross-team initiatives.

  • Partner with product, design, analytics, and engineering leaders across both regions to shape roadmaps.

  • Advise domain-level planning and lead design reviews across the regional teams.

  • Make AI-native engineering a durable practice across the teams: set the bar, own the teams' automation as a maintained portfolio, and extend those standards to teams we work closely with.

  • Evolve engineering excellence standards (reliability, observability, security, quality) and resolve the long-standing problems that limit scale before they become bottlenecks.

  • Raise the engineering bar across both regions by mentoring engineers at multiple levels through design and code reviews, and expanding team knowledge and skills.

  • Stay hands-on across TypeScript, React Native, Java/Kotlin, and Go; set the standard in code review.

  • Report to the Senior Engineering Manager, Americas.

You have:
  • Strong computer science, web, and native app fundamentals, and a command of design patterns and distributed-systems concepts.

  • 10+ years of software development experience, including leading large, multi-team initiatives end to end.

  • Advanced expertise in one or more of TypeScript, JavaScript, Kotlin, Java, or Go.

  • 4+ years of React or React Native development experience.

  • Experience leading team and cross-team design reviews, and designing for extensibility.

  • Experience using AI throughout the software development lifecycle, and helping others apply it well.

  • Excellent collaboration skills, with a track record of influencing across team boundaries.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
