Powering Innovation, Delivering Excellence: Leading the Future of Power Studies!

As a Systems Studies Engineer, you will perform power systems engineering studies in the areas of electromagnetic transients, load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, control design, equipment application, and other transmission and distribution (T&D) areas. Maintain, enhance, and apply knowledge of concepts, technology, and regulations in the power systems field.

The Power Systems Engineering Division (PSED) at Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) serves as the company's engineering and consulting arm, helping grid operators, utilities, generators, and major energy users plan, design, and solve complex power system challenges. Our specialty is delivering tailored services that uncover insights beyond the surface and proactively address technical and commercial risks. Our focus is delivering dependable, low-friction project outcomes, reducing uncertainty around system reliability, schedule, compliance, complexity, stranded capital, and reputational exposure.

What You'll Do

  • Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Analysis: Conduct insulation coordination, harmonic, short-circuit, and grounding studies for T&D systems, including FACTS, HVDC, and converter-based resources.
  • Grid Stability & Planning: Execute load flow, transient stability, reactive planning, and generator interconnection studies.
  • Modern Energy Resources: Perform specialized studies on renewables, distributed energy resources (DER), battery energy storage (BESS), and grid modernization.
  • System Protection: Utilize software for relay and protection studies and performance monitoring.
  • Testing & Validation: Support generator testing and the development of simulation models validated against industry standards.
  • Technical Judgment: Condition models and evaluate simulation outputs based on expected system capabilities and equipment operations.
  • Parameter Estimation: Estimate equipment parameters using known values or provide critical feedback when data quality is questionable.
  • Engineered Processes: Apply structured, engineered processes through all stages of a study to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Technical Reporting: Prepare and present reports for internal and external clients, maintaining high standards for grammar, formatting, and minimal re-work.
  • Industry Knowledge: Maintain and apply an understanding of the evolution of standards, orders, guidelines, and tariffs.
  • Technical Publication: Prepare papers and articles for professional journals, trade magazines, and presentations at industry conferences.
  • Cross-Divisional Support: Assist with study initiatives for other MEPPI departments and divisions.
  • Vendor & Consultant Interaction: Conduct business in a timely, cooperative manner to further the professional image of the Power Systems Engineering Division (PSED).
  • Policy Stewardship: Maintain a thorough knowledge of MEPPI's Quality, Safety, and Environmental Policies and their direct impact on engineering work.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
