A variety of Seattle innovators joined the ranks of companies across the nation this year.

Seattle has no shortage of big-name tech success stories and more are still in development. Companies across a range of industries from digital media to gaming made big moves toward their business growth this year. A number of companies chose to expand their operations by getting acquired. Learn more about the Seattle-based companies that were acquired in 2022 and what this means for their future growth.

Seattle native Mint State Labs builds creator tools to help power virtual goods economies on the blockchain. The company will join Orange Comet, a California-based Web3 entertainment business, in an acquisition announced in December. Following the deal’s close, Orange Comet will continue to create Web3 content with the added help of Mint State Labs’ employees and contractors. 

 

Announced in July, RealNetworks was acquired by Greater Heights in a deal that closed in December. RealNetworks specializes in artificial intelligence and machine learning-powered digital media solutions. By merging with Greater Heights, an affiliate of RealNetwork’s founder Rob Glaser, the new company hopes to fully realize the opportunities its technology can unlock.

 

Give InKind is a gifting platform that allows people to provide whatever kind of help they’re able to offer — financial or otherwise — to those in need. The company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Wolfe, a gift card fulfillment company, in a December acquisition. By joining Wolfe’s larger business, Tacoma-based Give InKind can access resources and capital to further its growth. Give InKind was also featured in the Built In Future 5 series in January.

 

Based in Redmond, AFour Technologies provides software engineering services. The company was acquired by ACL Digital, a California-based company that plans to deepen its digital product engineering capabilities. AFour’s 400-person team will join the ranks of ACL Digital as the newly conjoined entity works to help companies streamline their operations.

 

Since the streaming giant expanded into the gaming category, Netflix has been on an acquisition spree to build out its new offerings. As of November, its latest addition is Spry Fox, a Seattle-based gaming studio that specializes in “cozy” mobile games. With Spry Fox’s original titles such as Alphabear 2 and Cozy Grove, Netflix will expand its games portfolio into a new genre.
