Job Description:

Russell Investments (RI) is seeking a Director, Corporate Strategy who will play a critical role in developing and executing RI’s strategy to accelerate global growth. Reporting directly to the Chief Strategy Officer, this individual will support each of the three responsibilities of the Strategy team:

  • Corporate Strategy: Identifying new areas of growth where emerging market trends and client needs intersect with RI’s capabilities and right to win.
  • Strategic Execution: Collaborating with RI’s institutional and retail business leaders in North America, Europe/Mideast, and Asia and their teams to drive execution of that strategy.
  • Corporate Development: Accessing new capabilities and additional scale in prioritized areas through M&A and strategic partnerships.

This individual will combine an external focus on sourcing creative ideas that expand and challenge BAU thinking with a pragmatic ability to organize and lead cross-functional teams to vet and implement those ideas. This is a high-profile role within RI, working closely with senior leaders on the Executive Committee and Operating Committee on top priorities of the firm.

The position will be located in New York or Seattle.

The responsibilities of the Director, Corporate Strategy include:

  • Analyzing internal data and conducting external research (e.g., market segmentation, competitive assessments) to identify new growth ideas, and working with regional business leaders to build conviction in those ideas.
  • Partnering with functional teams and leaders (e.g., Finance, Marketing, Product Development, Technology/Operations) to work seamlessly with the regional Go-To-Market sales and distribution teams.
  • Synthesizing complex analyses and financial projections into concise communications that focus RI’s leadership and Board of Directors on strategic insights and recommendations.
  • Planning and leading corporate development projects, including managing internal teams, working with external advisors, and at times coordinating with peers at potential acquisition/partnership targets.
  • Tracking progress with strategic execution and key performance indicators to rapidly surface any implementation challenges/resource needs that could otherwise slow down implementation of the strategy.
  • Mentoring and at times managing more junior members of the Corporate Strategy team
  • Adapting within a fast-moving environment, with a constant focus on innovating and winning the evolving asset management marketplace.

The successful candidate will have extensive demonstrable skills and experiences including the following:

  • 6-7+ years of total experience, including 3+ years in corporate strategy role(s) strongly preferred at a top-tier management consulting or private equity firm.
  • Experience in asset management or other relevant financial services .
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred.
  • Ability to shape and drive processes independently, including engaging with line leaders and subject-matter experts credibly and with humility.
  • Excellent communication, storytelling, and presentation skills, with the ability to build materials and present findings effectively to the CEO and Executive Committee.
  • Strong project management skills, including coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Being a quick study on new businesses and markets, reflecting the diversity of geographies, channels, and product lines in which RI competes.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
