Overview

Microsoft Quantum is advancing quantum computing through the development of highly specialized hardware and supporting technologies. Our hardware development brings together electrical, mechanical, systems, verification, and manufacturing engineering to solve complex challenges across the quantum computing stack.

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to contribute to the development of sophisticated electronics used in demanding quantum-hardware environments. In this role, you will translate engineering requirements into robust, manufacturable Printed Circuit Board (PCB) designs and work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and manufacturing partners from early design through release and verification. You will have the opportunity to apply deep electrical design expertise while helping improve the tools, processes, and methodologies that enable scalable hardware development.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

This role combines detailed electrical system design ownership with cross-functional hardware development. Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Translate electrical requirements, schematics, constraints, and mechanical inputs into complex PCB assembly designs and layouts.

  • Own architecture and implementation of electrical subsystems

  • Independently develop and maintain board design documentation, including schematics, electrical constraint specifications, and fabrication and assembly outputs, through established release processes.

  • Define component selection for a particular subsystem, drive down selection process from several options into one design direction

  • Collaborate with other electrical engineers, mechanical, signal and power integrity, systems integration, and manufacturing partners to resolve interface tradeoffs and incorporate design-review feedback.

  • Develop and support verification plans, board bring-up, hardware characterization, debugging, and root-cause analysis for complex design issues.

  • Identify design and execution risks early, recommend design or process improvements, and communicate project status to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Work closely with FW and SW to understand how electrical design integrates with their project needs, prioritize simplicity and easy debuggability of the system

  • Define stack-ups, placement, routing, grounding, return-path, and layer-use strategies for low-noise, mixed-signal, high-density, and high-reliability electronics. Work closely with the PCB designer to understand placement and routing tradeoffs.
