Microsoft Entra secures identities for billions of users - and, increasingly, for the AI agents acting on their behalf. Within Identity, the User Authentication team owns the unified platform for Enterprise and Consumer across users, user like agents, digital workers, devices and securing AI. We are hiring a Principal Engineering Manager to set the technical direction for securing the platform as well as securing the customers with velocity and quality. As a Principal Engineering Manager, you will define strategy, build world-class teams, and deliver foundational capabilities that power unphishable modern credentials, protocol modernization, post quantum readiness and the next generation of secure AI and agentic system on a unified platform. Responsibilities
  • Build and grow the team. Hire, develop, and retain a high-caliber engineering team, and turn senior engineers into technical leaders and future managers.
  • Set the technical and product direction and be accountable for delivering secure systems that safely reasons over various invariants and principles.
  • Set the bar for safe agentic engineering.
  • Establish how the team designs, tests, and ships AI that must be correct, explainable, and reversible -hardening posture without breaking users.
  • Build a team culture where reliability, security, and operational excellence are first-class. 
  • Represent the work to leadership and customers.
  • Shape the roadmap with partners and executives across Microsoft and bring feedback directly back into the plan

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements: 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 


Preferred qualifications:

  • 3+ years people management experience.
  • Experience in either identity, security systems or distributed systems at scale

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
