Overview

Microsoft Commerce is building the platform layer that powers shopping across Copilot, Bing, Edge, and partner surfaces. Personalization is the layer that makes those experiences feel like they know the user: the right products, the right guidance, at the right moment, grounded in the user’s intent, history, and preferences. Microsoft Commerce is hiring a Principal Product Manager to own the personalization layer for Commerce — the user shopping profile, memory and signals, and the personalization models that shape ranking, recommendations, and guidance across every Commerce surface.

As a Principal Product Manager, you will define and drive the personalization strategy for Commerce: what we learn about a shopper (explicitly and implicitly), how that understanding is represented in a durable shopping profile, how it integrates with MAI’s broader memory and personalization systems, and how it feeds the ranking, recommendation, and response systems that users experience. The role sits inside the Commerce Platform team and consumes the platform’s catalog, relevance, and ranking capabilities — turning a shared technical foundation into experiences that feel personal at Microsoft scale.

You will utilize your experience building personalization, recommendation, memory, or signals-driven product systems, to set long-term strategy, define the data and model requirements, run rigorous experimentation, and partner across product, engineering, data science, and privacy teams.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Define the long-term product vision and roadmap for Commerce personalization — the shopping profile, memory/signals, and personalization models.
  • Establish how Commerce personalization integrates with the broader MAI memory and personalization systems, contributing signals and consuming shared user understanding.
  • Partner with engineering and data science to translate personalization strategy into data requirements, model plans, features, and measurable outcomes.
  • Define how the personalization layer is consumed by the Platform’s ranking/relevance systems and by Copilot, Bing, and Edge surface teams — with clear interfaces and quality bars.
  • Drive improvements in relevance, recommendation quality, proactive-pick precision, and the freshness and coverage of the user shopping profile.
  • Own the experimentation framework: design tests, define success metrics, and prove personalization lift on customer and business outcomes.
  • Partner with privacy, consent, and legal teams to ensure personalization is transparent, controllable, and trusted by users.
  • Create clear product requirements, prioritization frameworks, and success metrics for personalization investments.
  • Influence senior stakeholders across Commerce, MAI, and Copilot to align personalization investments with broader product and monetization priorities.
  • Build and lead a high-performing PM team over time, including direct PM ownership and dotted-line coordination with distributed teams.

  • Experience partnering with engineering and data science teams to deliver complex, data-driven product solutions.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
