Microsoft is reimagining how Sovereign Clouds are engineered, deployed, maintained, and operated. Our team works in a fast-paced environment where innovation, collaboration, security, and engineering excellence are core to how we build and operate cloud services. Our mission is to build software and platform capabilities that enable Azure services to operate reliably and securely across sovereign and government cloud environments. We focus on delivering enterprise commitments around availability, resiliency, security, compliance, data management, and operational excellence while enabling Azure to expand into new geographies and markets.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a deep engineering foundation, a high degree of ownership, and a passion for solving complex distributed systems and cloud infrastructure problems. In this role, you will work across the software stack, collaborate with engineers and partner teams, and drive technical solutions from design through implementation, deployment, and operation. You will have opportunities to solve ambiguous engineering problems, influence technical direction, improve engineering systems and processes, and mentor other engineers while building deep expertise in Azure and sovereign cloud infrastructure.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and operate highly available, scalable, secure, and observable cloud services.
  • Drive technical design and implementation for complex engineering problems, evaluating architectural approaches and trade-offs.
  • Drive features and projects end-to-end, from requirements and design through deployment and production readiness.
  • Build deep domain expertise in cloud infrastructure, global deployment technologies, and sovereign cloud engineering.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to define technical solutions, resolve dependencies, and deliver cross-service capabilities.
  • Improve service reliability and operational excellence through automation, monitoring, diagnostics, and root-cause analysis.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering best practices through design reviews, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
