The selected candidate will underwrite construction-related insurance risks within assigned authority, applying independent, analytical, data-driven judgment to evaluate and price accounts. Works with limited guidance from leadership to accept, modify or decline business, focusing on construction contractors, subcontractors, developers, and related project risks.
To be considered for this role, candidates must reside within the specified geographic location. This position requires regular in-person visits with local brokers and agents, so remote hires outside the designated territory cannot be accommodated.

Responsibilities
- Underwrite construction accounts (contractors, subcontractors, developers, OCIPs/CCIPs, builder's risk) within delegated authority, making data-driven accept/decline and pricing decisions.
- Manage and grow a portfolio of brokers/agents and clients; build and maintain strong market relationships to source profitable business.
- Assess project and contractor exposures (contracts, safety programs, loss history, finances, delivery method) and negotiate terms, limits, endorsements, and facultative referrals as needed.
- Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, Risk Control, Legal, and Directors of Underwriting to set pricing, manage complex placements, and resolve coverage issues.
- Contribute to product development and process/tool improvements for construction lines; identify emerging exposure trends and suggest guideline or pricing changes.
- Mentor junior underwriters and new hires on construction-specific underwriting practices and contract risk assessment.
Qualifications
- Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
- A minimum of 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related experience
- CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility that includes competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process, and proficiency in the use of qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques
- Must demonstrate comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
- Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business
