Summary

As Sr. Director, Business Finance, you will serve as the finance business partner to Innovation & Technology and Lab Operations SVPs and their orgs— two of GeneDx's most strategically important functions. These orgs are responsible for R&D, Product Management, IT, and overall COGS and Capex investments. You will design, build and maintain the financial infrastructure these teams need: the operating rhythms, forecasting models, decision frameworks, and dashboards that turn data into decisions. And then you will use that infrastructure to co-own financial outcomes with executive leaders who are ready and committed to a higher level of financial partnership.

In addition to this, you and your team will serve as Finance Business Partner to all the corporate functions (Legal, HR, Finance, and Medical Affairs) helping them manage opex spend to budget and in making sound finance decisions related to scaling and all investments.

You will lead a small, talented team — and over time, you will design the structure needed to deliver on the financial and business objectives of the functions you serve.

If you've spent your career operating inside a well-built FP&A function and you're ready to be the one who builds it — this is your role.

Job Responsibilities

  • Full FP&A responsibility for Innovation & Technology and Lab Operations: annual planning, forecasting, and in-year financial management
  • Design and implement a monthly financial operating rhythm that drives accountability and proactive decision-making with both SVPs
  • Lead weekly, monthly, and quarterly business reviews — own the financial narrative, not just the numbers
  • Prepare and partner on board-level financial decks presented by the SVPs — ensuring clarity, accuracy, and strategic coherence
  • Identify and prioritize cost optimization opportunities and resource investment decisions in partnership with SVP leaders
  • Co-own SIOP process with supply chain
  • Define & build the financial infrastructure from the ground up: models, templates, dashboards, and decision frameworks

People Manager

  • Yes
  • Lead, coach, and develop a growing finance team — starting with an Associate Director and Finance Manager, with the autonomy to design the right structure over time

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • 12+ years of progressive finance experience, with significant FP&A business partnership at the Director level or above
  • Demonstrated experience building financial operating infrastructure — forecasting models, planning cycles, business review cadences — not inheriting them
  • Proven track record of holding senior business leaders accountable to financial performance through structured operating rhythms
  • Elite financial storytelling and executive presence. Translating complexity into clarity and you're credible in a board room
  • Player-coach leadership style — you design the approach, develop your team to execute, and engage at the right level of detail
  • A track record of driving decisions and business outcomes through finance and not just producing high-quality deliverables

Preferred

  • Experience in life sciences, diagnostics, biotech, or healthcare
  • Exposure to technology or lab/operations financial models
  • Experience supporting functions through periods of rapid scaling or transformation

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
